Super User J Francho Posted April 29, 2009 Super User Posted April 29, 2009 So is the Sol. CRBB and sealed drag. A FAR better reel. : Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted April 29, 2009 Super User Posted April 29, 2009 I do have a friend using a Cabo 40, it's a very fine reel, he swears by it. I have been with guides and seems to be the reel of choice. One guide out of Islamorado and another out of Ft Pierce. I'm on a saltwater board here in Florida and the choice of many hardcore fisherman is the Cabo. I liked it, but since I don't own one I wouldn't rank it. Buy a Van Staal a be a real player Quote
GonzoFishing Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 I fish saltwater with a Cabo 40 and it is an awesome reel! On the other hand I also own a Boca 40 and it seems just as good and it sells for less $$. SirSnookAlot is right about the Van Stall but your also looking at $650+. I'd love to own one though ;D Quote

Just be sure to give any SW reel a quick FW rinse, if you want to save your investment. Don't use a lot of water pressure. If anything, just use the tip of your hose and give it a 2 second bath to wash off the SW. It will help keep the spool and reel in good shape. Quote
mrlitetackle Posted April 29, 2009 Author Posted April 29, 2009 ya sirsnookalot, a van staal would be great, but a little out of budget to say the least..... and for everyone, normally i am a strict shimano guy, but the cabo is ridiculously overbuilt for the salt.....which is why im considering it.... right now i own a saros 3000 for the salt, but again, you can never have too much gear!!! about the sol, i have owned daiwa's in the past....and dont get me wrong, they are excellent reels, but i never quite took a liking to them..... ive definetly got a lot more consideration to do before i possibly get the cabo though.... thanx to all, and i also hope for more input as well!!! That's too bad. In this situation, the Cabo is the overpriced reel, and the Sol is the underpriced reel. The Cabo has a "SW paint job", but if you briefly flush your gear after each use, this "special paint job" is pointless. If you've never owned a $200+ reel, I highly suggest you reconsider the Sol. At this price point, reels are considerbly better than a $100 reel. But, you'd hope so, considering it's twice as much. Quote

For SW dunking you mean. ;D If you don't dunk you're reels, any FW, sealed drag and anti-corrosion bearings will serve just as well in SW, than FW. Since I rinse my equipment after each SW use, I don't see the point. And I don't dunk my equipment either. But if you plan on just buying it, using it, and storing it, go with the Cabo. Like you said, built for the salt it's going to retain. :-/ Quote
mrlitetackle Posted April 30, 2009 Author Posted April 30, 2009 obviously, i don't plan on "dunking" any reel in the salt.... but the reality is.....sh%t happens..... and i frequently wade fish....and while it may not be "dunked", it will get its fair share of abuse... the reality of the matter is that one is more equipped than the other.... i simply want the input of those who have actually used one or know others who have (thanx sirsnookalot and CharlieBrown!!)....not that i dont value the input of all....its just opinions of those who don't have experience with this reel is not what im seeking here, hence my original post... Super User SirSnookalot Posted April 30, 2009 Super User Posted April 30, 2009 ya sirsnookalot, a van staal would be great, but a little out of budget to say the least..... Just teasing you about the Van Staal, I wouldn't buy one either, unless I used it strictly for surf casting(can't get sand in it). No one plans on dunking a reel but it does happen and if you wade it will get wet even if it hasn't been dunked, nature of the beast. I'm using a supreme in salt (magnesium frame) which is not recommended and I always rinse, reel still operates perfect. I'm not familiar with the daiwa line up, so no comment there, but if the cabo is pricey you can't go wrong with stradic fi, it's lighter too. I'm not up on present prices. Many good opinions here but I think the key factor is use, This is only me, cabo for offshore and pier use where weight is less of a factor and protection from salt spray or stradic fi for inshore and walking. It's not the bow, it's the archer. Quote

Well I've briefly owned a Cabo 20. Returned it two weeks later, got the Sol. I shouldn't have even wasted my time. The quality of the Sol is a bit greater than the Cabo, IMO. I've also owned the Catalyst as well. I've tried and tested Quantum SW reels. Feel they're a bit overpriced, IMO. Decent reels, but if you can get a Cabo for $150, do it. If you're paying the same price as a Sol, don't even think about the Cabo. I'm not a "fan boy" of Daiwa, I'm just telling you, honestly, you're better off with the Sol or Sustaian by Shimano. I just don't feel the Cabo and Sol are in the same "class". You may, and that's fine. But I couldn't justify the price of the Cabo for the quality you're getting. You're getting $150 quality, for $200. That's what I'm trying to say. The only thing I love about Quantum, is their drag. It's mighty sweet. But then again, the Sol is 2x smoother, and it too, is mighty sweet. So there's always going to tradeoffs in the reel industry. This is purely my opinion. Take what you will. Like I mentioned, I'm not a "fan boy" of Daiwa. I would like to recommend the best reel that's in that price range. And I do not believe the Cabo belongs there. Quote

mrlitetackle Posted April 30, 2009 Author Posted April 30, 2009 glad to hear you have actually used one iFisch.......makes your argument more valid to say the least.. what were your reasons behind returning the cabo?? and........on an unrelated note.... It's not the bow, it's the archer. too-shay sirsnook.... Quote
