fatbass Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 I don't understand the difference for recommending 65# braid or 25-30# mono for pitching and flipping. Is it the equivalent diameter? Why not use 20 or 25# braid? Just wondering :-/ Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted April 22, 2009 Super User Posted April 22, 2009 Why use 25lb braid when you can use 50-60#...It's all about getting the strongest line with the smallest diameter...If you could fish with 50lb mono....I'm sure plenty of people would Quote
snapshotmd Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 .... but with a smaller diameter line for equal line strength, one could cast further and/or lighter rigs. Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 22, 2009 Super User Posted April 22, 2009 You can use either and many people do It's all about personal preferences; I only use braid in matted vegetation Quote
Infidel. Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 I like 30lb braid in the green stuff because it seems to cut through better but I like the 50lb when I am flipping wood. Quote
mase088 Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 20 or 25lb Big Game in most situations, if I'm working nasty stuff at a distance, or its an absolute must, then braid. Quote
The_Natural Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Most professional anglers use braid or Fluorocarbon; more specifically...heavy fluoro for wood and braid for grass. Quote
Super User David P Posted April 23, 2009 Super User Posted April 23, 2009 30lb braid digs into itself easier when you get caught up and trying to pull out a snag, or even when you get a decent fish. Not to mention, I have seen 30lb braid snap on a few occasions, and when 50lb braid is equivalent to 12lb mono, and 65 to 17, it's nice to know you have that added strength. Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Why not some 20-25lb fluoro? That's what i use for the techniques. Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted April 23, 2009 Super User Posted April 23, 2009 If I am pitching or flipping scattered rock or timber I usuall use 20# mono. If its grass it is either 50 or 65# braid. Quote
adclem Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Interesting replies. I was figuring it would be overwhelmingly braid all the way. Later, Quote
Super User David P Posted April 23, 2009 Super User Posted April 23, 2009 Why not some 20-25lb fluoro? That's what i use for the techniques. Some guys think line diameter bothers fish more then line visibility, meaning the thickness of the line bothers them more then being able to see it. 20-25lb fluoro also has a LOT more memory then even 65lb braid, some guys hate dealing with memory. Braid cuts through weeds and other underwater vegetation, fluoro doesn't do this nearly as well. and last but not least, 20-25lb fluoro breaks easier then 65lb braid, some of the stuff I throw my junk in, I wouldn't get back with 20lb fluoro. ....just a few things that came to mind. jacker Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 i use 50lb suffix, i figure when your throwing a jig into a mass of timber or grass and draging it through bushes, line visability isnt as much of a factor. Quote
michaelkim_9582 Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 i like flipping everything light. On one of my rigs I have spooled 20# fireline tracer braid and the other the same execpt 40#. I'll usually start of with the 20# and if it has really thick vegetation or has alot more snags, Ill switch to 40. I have a flouro leader on both of them. Quote

You obviously have not seen the stuff we throw our "junk" into here in FL, LOL! I have never had a problem with even the 20lb fluoro. Besides, when flippin/pitchin there is not enough line out to even notice the memory! If they can't see fluoro than why would the diameter bother them? Did you mean because it effects the action of the lure? Quote
Super User Tin Posted April 24, 2009 Super User Posted April 24, 2009 Why would you use flouro is the stuff is that heavy down there? If you are flipping stuff that is that heavy there is most likely little light penitration so the line really isn't visible. So why not just go with 50-65 pound braid? It would also be thinner (easier to handle) and more abrasion resistant that flouro. And with braid not being round it will cut through the veggies when setting the hook and winching the fish in. :-? Yeah, and it will also cut through other stuff too, fingers, rod guides etc! I love the sensitivity of fluoro as well. Besides, the water in the vegetation i fish is usually clearer than the rest of the lake so why would i use braid and potentially lower my bite ratio? Like i said, i have NEVER had a break using it so i find 65# braid a little excessive! Quote
FishingPirate Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 I hate braid on rocks because it frays and breaks. Flouro takes longer to get in that bad of shape. If one wants to say,"well retie, jackA5$." then I would reply with,"I cant tell if the braid is worn when its wet, the flouro, I can." Thats just my opinion. Quote
mase088 Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 I like to flip with the lightest weight I can get away with, a lot of the time being a 3/4 oz or 1/2 oz. I have set the hook and missed with 50# braid and had it pop behind me and send my $6 sinker 30 yards into the middle of the lake many times. I switched to 20lb Big Game and haven't had a problem setting the hook and missing at all, and I have not broken off at all either, so until I find a better reason so use braid again, I'm done with it. Did you mean because it effects the action of the lure? Maybe your junk isn't nearly the stuff I throw my junk into, being as I have snapped 20 and 25lb 100% flouro and Pline fluoro. Not to mention braid makes it a hell of a lot easier to cut through that junk when pulling the fish in. I pitch a distance away and notice every bit of memory, flipping on the other hand, that is true. Nothing to do with the action of the lure, fish can feel the line, it's an object in the water that isn't natural, 25lb fluoro doesn't feel much like a weed. Many smaller lakes I fish, I can many more bites with 10lb braid no leader then I do with 15lb fluoro. Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Trust me, FL junk is THICK! I have never heard of line diameter bothering a fish in the sense that they feel it's presence! I have always heard it alters the lures action though. When i am flippin/pitchin i aim at specific(small) targets where i think a fish will be. If they are going to take the lure they are going to take it right away. Without having time to even inspect it IMO. It's just a confidence thing i guess. Besides like i said, i have NEVER had any issues with breaking the line so why change now! Quote
