After reading over my manuals on my new sahara and sedona shimano reels i stumbled acrossed something new. It was setting your winding :-/ so that your line winds onto the spool more to the front or back of the spool. Now I know ;D what those small washers are for in that little plastic bag...but I have no idea :-? what works best for mono line. Also if someone can explain to me why this works...that would be great too.  :)

thanks

I don't use that much spinning gear but off of the top of my head..

Should be 3 of them, not sure if they are of different thicknesses.

What the small red/black washers do is adjust the in and out motion or the stroke length of the spool inside the rotor as the rotor turns. The more distance from the rotor base the spool stays the closer to the rear of the spool the line is stacked. Removing or adding washers is how the line stacking is adjusted (again not sure if they are of different thicknesses).

As far as what works for mono most all of the Shimano spinning reels I have serviced that had mono on them seemed to have all 3 washers on the spool main shaft.

Also if someone can explain to me why this works...that would be great too.
It is how the spools setup (positioning) on the main shaft is adjusted and as stated it adjust the stroke length of the spool as it moves in & out and the rotor turns...

Hope that helps some.... :)

reelmachanic....that explains a lot thanks. I just checked and on both reels there are 2 washers on the main shaft. Will stacking the line to the back have any advatages or disadvantages over stacking the line towards the front? Or is it better to set it for the type of line you are using which in my case is mono.

I guess i could always try it the way it is and then try different settings, but its probably going to be another 4 weeks before we are able to get on the water at this rate.

I have found that stacking too much on the back causes a lot of trouble with too much line coming off and making a nasty bird's nest.

Not to pick on Shimano, but does anyone know why you would want line to stack up on one end or the other ?

My buddy has one that is giving him fits, now I see whats going on.

Line tapering with more towards the front of the spool will improve casting distance, but don't overspool ,if you use braid you for sure get wind knots.
