Braided lines for Light weight spinning.

Last year I got into Power Pro braid on my baitcasters and really liked it. Now I am thinking of spooling a couple of my ultra lights with a strong thin diameter braid. Power Pro has an 8/1 and a 10/2 and Fireline has 6/2, 8/3 and a 10 /4. Any recommendations? I would be tossing unweighted plastics, tiny Mepps or Panther Martins and a lot of small jigs.

I use nothing but braid on my micro-lights. TUF Line 2/10 to be exact.

Power Pro is not bad stuff. At least it's 100% braided Spectra.

But FireLine, on the other hand is not even braided ! It's fused garbage, with the consistency of dental floss.

BTW, you won't have any problem casting small plastics and jigs, but you might have some line twist issues with Mepps, Panther Martins, etc.

Go with the power pro. Don't forget to use a fluoro leader though. I would go with 8 pound or 10 pound, and I might even go with the 15/4 power pro.

power  pro is outdated.go with berkley's new fireline braid.it is an 8 strand braid.it is rounder and smoother than the others and handles the best.

When spiderwire first came out, I would use it for every set up I had (which I think was only 3 at the time, ultra light spinning to bc). No line twist and never broke on me. My dad back in Pensacola, FL has recently switched from FW to Inshore fishing and swears by PowerPro. He sent me some 40# that I used for Salmon fishing when I was home on R&R in late October, cast very nice, no line twist on the Diawa 4000 that I was using. The only problem I had was when I hooked into a 36" King (female) and was landing it, the line snapped at the leader >. After I sat on the fish and drugged her on land, I checked the line and looked like it had some abrasion (could have been from the leader). Ok enough of the rambling. Are there any post that someone did on Spiderwire Ultra Cast. I'm thinking bout using it for some of my rigs but keep reading mixed reviews. Thanks all.

1.  Varivas Super Finesse - 15 lb test @ 1 lb test diameter, it's black, white and gray tones at 1m intervals for a camoflaged effect.

I hate to be the guy to throw in another opinion however, I fished Power pro for 3 years and last year made a very happy switch to suffix.  

I found Power pro to be very rough and light which caused me to have  problems with wind knots.  After using suffix all last year I have to say it was truly a pleasure and I was able to avoid all of the issues I experienced with the power pro line.

Last summer I did a week long "test" ....Power Pro with and without a leader for plastics fishing, mostly Senkos, worms, etc.

I experienced NO DIFFERENCE in fish catches...there were virtually identical.

Was this scientific, no, but it was good enough for me. Fishing bedded fish, I can see mono or flouro, or a long flouro leader. Other than that, any time I can I will use braid. The brand is your preference, but I like Power Pro.

Gonna pick up some of that ultra light stuff!!!!!

Just be aware that as strong as braid is it is not very abrasion resistant, so if you throwing worms, or jigs around rock a flouro leader will help prevent break offs when you get hung up.

I can see that, but I am a line watcher...always checking the knots or for wear. Flouro frays as well.....

I am more for the ease of use VS. amount of fish caught, that's why I posted another thread just on FLOURO!!!!

I used 20# spiderwire on my first BC setup back in I think 2000.  Fished day in and day out.  I PCS (move) to Germany and rods get put in storage.  I come back to the states in Mid '05, takes forever to get my house hold goods, winter hits when I get my fishing gear so I don't get to fish until Spring '06.  Same line (never re-spooled) and no abrasion what's so ever.  And the rivers and lakes here are full of rocks and hard structure...depends on who the "braid" is by.

Perfect. I have one set delicate for the same purpose.I think i'm using the 10/4 one...can't remember exact as it's been 2-3 years since i've changed any line on it.

I have very few problems with line twist on braid even with the inline spinners.You can put a small swivel on if you are really concerned about the twist.I do use a fluorocarbon leader when i switch to small jigs.Confidence thing i guess.

I would recommend 8 lb test PP for what you're talking about. I've used 5 lb PP on my UL, and it was a lot of fun, but 5 lb is cobweb-thin, and the wind poses a real problem with it. You can cast the tiniest baits a mile, however. 8 lb test braid is perfect for what you want, IMO. I use it all winter for trout fishing.

If that is the case, why do you need special scissors to cut braid but not flouro??? (And KIDS scissors at that!!!! lol)

Wood and grass = braid and flouro could also be used without much issue. It is just really easy to winch in a fish with 65 pound braid than 20 pound flouro.

Anything concrete, docks, and rocks it is all flouro for me.

I think you are misunderstanding what we are trying to convey.  Braid is strong as hell heck you can probably pull a car with the stuff.  The one weakness it has is when it rubs against a sharp rock and gets frayed it will loose its strength and break very easily.  This is why I recommended using a flouro leader when using bottom baits in rocky conditions.

I have had 50lb braid snap right away when my bait was stuck in rock and I have also horsed a fish through weeds with the same line with no problems.

Thanks guys. Appreciate all the help. I used to go to two pound mono to toss some really light stuff for trout, With that it was always "win some/lose some". To get one, or two pound diameter from a strong braid is awesome. It does, however, make sense that a light braid could blow around some.

I use a lot of backing, and just about 50 yards of braid.

That defeats my purpose, lightest line possible on lightest gear increases my challenge and that's why I'm there.
