Anyone here into using giant cranks in shallower water.  Say 6-10 ft area?  Next year this is what I'm going to focus on and will be throwing huge cranks bigger then dd22's, but dive shallower.  They will be fished mainly in a stump field. These cranks will be approx 1+ oz. The main focus here is big fish holding in the area I will be fishing.  As in big fish I'm referring 5-7 hopefully 8-10lbs.

I'm really looking for some tips and tricks to do this.

Also what lb line do you throw?

I'm pretty much set on rod and reel.

#1 Get yourself a telescopic lure retriever!

Then bang those stumps. I am using original formula Yo-Zuri Hybrid #15. It won't break easily, but can be broken. If you decide to go with braid, you are going to have to cut your line occasionally.

Here's one lure I saw someone posting about on another post.

That site is great by the way, it has a lot of lures that aren;t mainstream on basspro or cabelas

But that one is pretty pricey...happy hunting

Yeah but the realizer only dives 5 feet

I would use the heaviest line you can that still allows your bait to bang off those stumps.  Ive never used this technique but I am assuming braid would be good for high strength low diameter.  How deep does your cranks dive on say 12-14 pound mono?

Thanks guys keep the suggestions coming. I was looking at probably going with the zuri 15-17lb for this. Braid has crossed my mind though. Lure retreiver will be a must.

I'm getting picky at my old age. I'm having some custom made cranks made and painted by Big M for 1 point in 1 lake. I've got some different style from him before and they are sweet.

Yeah I know sounds dumb having baits made for 1 lake and 1 point, but watch the My outtings this spring from Lake X :-X

I don't think this is dumb at all.  I am sure I will get to this point sooner or later.  I am actually getting ideas for specific jig skirts for certain lakes.  Let us know your results with out giving up to many details ofcourse  ;D.

I don't know of any huge cranks that dive 6-10ft...it seems like the large cranks are shallow cranks or wake baits.  If you can live with just a few feet...the Z-baits big bite shallow crank is hot right now, even though I haven't purchased one yet.  RC3.5 and BDS 4 are also good choices.  When I throw B2's and the like areas with stumps or other laydowns...I go with 15lb CXX.  I'm not messin' around  :D

I have some giant cranks (Musky and Saltwater) that I use for big fish in a stumpfields but rarely use them anymore. Storm Kickin' Minnow (six inch)started outfishing them all in the stumps for big fish. The bill on it lets it deflect off stumps like a crank and it catches way more fish than the cranks ever did. I still use the cranks to get down better deep on fast retrieves sometimes but prefer the Kickin' Minnow on medium and slow retrieves.
