crankbait2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 hello all I have a friend that just purchased a spinning reel kit from cabalas for his son. he came to me asking what pound test he can place on this reel. im not fimiliar with spinning reels at all, so i couldn't add any advice. i am attaching the link which shows what he bought. he says that he needs a very broad line that he can fish anything with. he says that he'll be throwing a worm on the end and some days. lures. can anyone offer any advice so i can pass it on to him? http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0052265122648a&type=product&cmCat=SEARCH_all&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&No=72&Ntk=Products&QueryText=fishing+travel&sort=all&_D%3AhasJS=+&selectedPerPage=72&N=0&firstPage=true&Nty=1&hasJS=true&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jsp.form23&_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1 Quote

dmac14 Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 20# Suffix Braid. Has line size of 8# mono. Strong and sensitive. Don't have to worry about line twist as much. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted April 1, 2009 Super User Posted April 1, 2009 Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft #6 (.010" diameter, 11.9 lb test). I also recommend treating ALL line with KVD Line & Lure Conditioner. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0030185119277a&type=product&cmCat=SEARCH_all&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&Ntk=Products&QueryText=yo-zuri+hybrid+ultra+soft&sort=all&Go.y=8&_D%3AhasJS=+&N=0&Nty=1&hasJS=true&Go.x=17&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jsp.form23&_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1 8-) Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted April 1, 2009 Super User Posted April 1, 2009 A 20# braid. Most 20# braids have a 6# mono equivalent diameter. Quote
coolhandlala Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 I think I would go with 10-15 lb braid of some kind. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted April 1, 2009 Super User Posted April 1, 2009 For me I would use 10-15# braid, assuming the son may be a bit inexperienced braid is not the way to go. He will go nuts with wind knots. I wouldn't get overly involved with higher priced line until he is comfortable with the equipment, I'd get trilene or any other comparable brand..............SOAK THE LINE IN HOT WATER FIRST !!!!!!!!!!, it's spools up better. If he is experienced,,,,,,,,,,,,,get the braid, superior strength and sensitivity. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted April 1, 2009 Super User Posted April 1, 2009 PLine CX 6 lb. or Trilene XL 8 lb. Quote
OnthePotomac Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 I would not start out someone with braid on a spinning reel. Buy any quality 8lb mono until he get a feel for the reel and how to use it. It is inexpensive and easy to use. I still use 8lb mono for some worm fishng and it works just fine. Braid moves you into proper drag settings and hook stting because there is no stretch. It requires more experience. Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted April 1, 2009 Super User Posted April 1, 2009 I don't think I would start out with braid either Quote
MichBassMan Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 I certainly would not start out a novice with braid; too expensive and too hart to untangle. Yozuri ultra soft #6 is plenty tough, very user friendly, and won't break your wallet. Good stuff. Quote
crankbait2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Author Posted April 1, 2009 thanks guys, i will definitley pass the info on. just a quick note. im not sure if his son is an avid fisher or not. i think he's around 20 or so, maybe 19. has he fished before, yeah probably but im not sure what his experience is. thanks again Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted April 2, 2009 Super User Posted April 2, 2009 There's no way on this God's earth that I would recommend a newby to start off with braid...period. Good way to turn someone off from fishing! Go with the most logical choice of 8# test, quality monofilament, such as Trilene XL. Much less problems and very versatile. Quote
ChazfromVA Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 i reccomend IZORLINE XXX in 10lb... should cover all situations rather efficiently.. here is the link www.IZORLINEEAST.com Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted April 2, 2009 Super User Posted April 2, 2009 Keep it simple and inexpensive. Good 'ol Trilene XL in the red box. 6 to 8 lb should be fine. Anything beyond 8 lb could be trouble for the inexperienced. Trilene is an aewsome line. Sufix aint too bad either. Quote
