There are many applications that would work for you. It all depends on how serious you are going to be about bass fishing, budget and intended uses. I think a good all around set up would be a 6'6"-7' Medium or medium heavy rod paired with a bait caster that has at least 5 or more bearings and a 6:3:1 gear ratio. Just my thoughts.

Like i said, there are so many out there that would work. A really good/reliable set-up would be a St. Croix Mojo Bass rod in 7' MH/Mod and an Abu Garcia Revo S. The rod has enough backbone to fight the fish but also enough tip to throw lighter baits accurately. The reel is extremely smooth and has a 24lb drag system so you can adjust it for different line sizes. IMO, that would be a very versatile combo.

What's your price range for rod, reel, or both...unless you have a great wealth of extra cash, I would agree with the combo mentioned but I would take a look at some Bass Pro combos (Extreme, Pro Qualifier), Quantum Code, last years Energy or Tour PT, Pflueger Supreme or Asaro, Abu Black/Silver Max, Shimano Citica.  For Rods there are even more choices Mojo bass rods, Carrot Stix, Quantum Energy PT rods, Kistler Magnesium, Bass Pro rods, Shimano...tell you what go here and take your pick  http://www.***.com/  free shipping over $50

Either the Citica E or the Revo S. Both outstanding reels in their price range. As for a rod, St. Croix MoJo Bass or Premiere would be my suggestion. 6'6" or 7' MH/F
