Need to know if good

I have a pinnacle lp100 reel with a Shakespeare Excursion graphit medium 6' pole with 8 pound Berkley Trilene XL smooth casting line. Please tell me if this is a good combo. Thanks

If you needed advice on a rod/reel combo for bass fishing you should have asked BEFORE you bought it. Even on a budget you would have been directed to a much better combo than what you chose.

Since YOU asked, I'll be blunt............no it's not a good combo for bass fishing. I know nothing of the reel/rod, so I'll let some one else comment on that I am speaking more about your line choice. I would have gone with line no smaller than 12lb test. Leave the 8lb line for spinning gear.

Logan, I looked up the reel and it seems like a decent little reel. I've never used one but Pinnacle has a decent reputation. It should be a serviceable reel if you take care of it (all reels regardless of cost require that).

As far as the rod goes, I'd need to know a little more. It's a 6' medium? Rod of that length and power can be used for various techniques, small crankbaits, topwater lures, light plastics. Look at the lure weight recommendations on the rod.

As for the the 8lb line, I use 8lb on one of my 6'6" medium baitcast rods. I use it for, like I said above, light cranks, topwaters, etc.

Is your rig a bass rig? It is if you catch bass on it. Fish it, enjoy it, use it within its limits and it should be fine. Read some articles on this website, and soon you'll be yearning for more equipment to handle heavier applications.

No It's not the best combo..But it will get you by if your a beginner.

That reel was my first baitcaster and I learned how to cast baitcasters with it.It was cheap and if anything goes bad on it, you can take it back to walmart.(I gave mine to my nephew).

As far as 8# test, I use it all the time for smallmouths at the river,It should be good for ya.We would just need more info on where you are fishing.

I'm a little confused. If you know nothing about the rod/reel how are you informed enough to tell this man it's not a good combo?  I own a couple low end rods and reels and some are great for the money and some aren't. Just because its not expensive doesn't mean its not a good combo. I think if you knew nothing of the combo you shouldn't have replied to this thread because there was no point in talking about something you know nothing about.

To add to your post.Upgrade the rod before the reel.The reel should be fine for a little while,but the rod should be upgraded if you are going to fish more than a couple times a month.

The Platinum Plus...which I think is the reel you have...would probably do you good for a little while.  Keep it clean and running good and it should do you well.  The rod, which I believe is available at Wal-Mart? isn't the best rod for bass fishing.  I bought one when I first started and caught a good number of fish on it, until I rolled it up in the window and broke the tip.  Then I got a Lightening rod which was much better.  I would keep the reel but try to find a better rod.  If you have a price range for a rod post it...I'm sure you could get some good suggestions...and some off the wall ones    :
