trav Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 I've found that, given time, most braids will lose some color. Solution.....just re-color the last few feet of braid with a big sharpie marker. And yes, you want to put some mono backing onto the spool before the braid, you don't have to use too much. Just use a blood knot, or another similar knot to connect them. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted March 30, 2009 Super User Posted March 30, 2009 digging in is caused by pulling against a snag which causes braid to dig into itself.this is solved by using a round smooth braid.the best is berkley's new fireline braid.braid on a baitcaster should be at least 12/50.i use 14/65 and 15/80.these are the same diameters as mono lines you would use.the thicker line helps prevent digging.save thin braids for spinning. Super User Crestliner2008 Posted March 30, 2009 Super User Posted March 30, 2009 When I first started using Fireline (Spectra) years ago, I was worried about the "frizzing" of the line near the bait, after many casts. I wrote the company and inquired as to whether or not this was detrimental (decreasing strength) and if I should re-tie more often. Their response to me was that this "frizzing" was just the coating they apply to the fibers and that it in no way decreased the strength or performance of the line. Further, they said that this design feature actually decreased the underwater visibility of the line! Who knew!? I still use Fireline to this day and have never been disappointed in it. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted March 30, 2009 Super User Posted March 30, 2009 Treating your braided lines with KVD Line and Lure will help it retain its natural color. Since I started using it, I havent noticed my lines fading at all. The product also seems to keep the braid from getting those little frayed strands. Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 The fading of color is almost imperceptible with yellow braid, and it is imperceptible with white braid. Those are my favorite two colors (because of visibility). However, if it bothers you, before you discard the line, take all the line off the spool and tie your mono backing to the faded end - the old switcharoo. Now it's almost like you're fishing with brand-new braid. Quote
Bassnajr Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 You should hope it looses its color...... Less visability under water. The better question is, when braid looses its color, is it weakened and is it time for it to be changed?? ajr Quote

The Next KVD Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Don't worry about it. The fish don't seem to care what how colorful your braid is. 8-) Quote
triwbass Posted March 31, 2009 Author Posted March 31, 2009 also kind of confused ,,lets say i buy the cam spider wire ,,,where im leading,,,, i would definitly ger 30lb 8 diameter ,,,,,what exact leader would you all use ? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 31, 2009 Super User Posted March 31, 2009 Try P-Line CFX Fluorocarbon Leader Material. Something in 8 to 12# will match well with the 30/8 braid. If you are fishing heavy weed cover, tie direct. Quote
triwbass Posted March 31, 2009 Author Posted March 31, 2009 that was exact one i wanted cause i use p-line and when i looked at the leader your talkng about on basspro website i could not figure out which size would be best for the 30lb 8lb dia spiderwire ,,,if you had that exact line in spiderwire please tell me exactly which you would buy in this leader,,, they only list the diameer in mm i believe ? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 31, 2009 Super User Posted March 31, 2009 Well, I generally use braid in 50, 65, and 80# size. For the most part, 12# Leader works fine, when I use a leader. When I am fishing in spring, in areas where there are LARGE Northern Pike, I up the leader to 40#, to prevent big (10 lb. +) Pike from stealing my baits. In a general sense, you want to keep the diameter of your mainline and leader similar - makes for a strong Uni to Uni connection. If you are going to use lines with more than "three hops" in line size, say like 12# FC leader on 20# braid, then an improved Allbright knot will work, or you can use a Spider Hitch to double the smaller line. For your 30/8 line, I'd get a spool of 10# CFX, and just fish it. As I said before, if all you're doing is throwing into weeds, skip the leader, unless you are having trouble getting lighter baits down with just the braid - Fluoro sinks. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted March 31, 2009 Super User Posted March 31, 2009 I don't notice much if any fading with Suffix Performance Braid. When I used Power Pro, it faded quite a bit and frayed somewhat after a period of time. Quote
triwbass Posted March 31, 2009 Author Posted March 31, 2009 my braid apps will be for piching flipping milfoil or froggig milfoil and pads ,, and pitching cypress trees so only thing i even might need a leader for is open wter carolina rigging ? would i get away with 8lb mono ,,,, and should i assume the shorter the leader length the stronger it will be ?
