I have spent the last week on the lake fishing with a new '09 Quantum Energy PT Burner reel. I thought some of you would be interested in an honest review of this reel. I put it on a new St Croix Mojo 6'6 jerkbait rod and spooled it with 10lb Yozuri Hybrid. Initially I took the reel apart and cleaned it. It actually came very clean and well lubed from the factory. The reel is very well built and I don't have any concerns about durability.

On the water, this reel impressed me over and over. It is a much lighter version than last years model at 7.7ounces(I think). It also felt tighter and better built than last years model. As far as looks, I prefer this color over last years but I don't care about that kind of stuff. I used this reel to throw pointers, X raps, and some small crankbaits.  This reel handles any weight lure with equal ease. Some of the days were brutal with 30MPH winds. This is where the Energy's ACSII braking system really shines. The majority of time, I kept it set on 3 but could easily switch it to 6 when throwing into the wind. This kept me from backlashes and allowed me throw effortlessly in all conditions. I find this system far superior to the popular Shimano system. However,  I would like to see more adjustability options.  There is a sizable difference between a 3 and a 6. I resolved this by loosening the spool very slightly and had no issues.

As for the drag, well I certainly haven't tested it this week. I have caught 100 bass and non over 3 pounds. Maybe I will chase the hybrids tomorrow to test it out!

The overall function and feel of this reel is superb. It is ultra smooooooooth, casts very well, is light, and versatile. I feel very spoiled by this reel and will be getting more. It is the best reel I have used in the $200 range.  :)( With the exception of the Chronarchs that were on sale)

9.5 out of 10

Great write up hawgchaser!

Good to hear the Energy PT held up to your test! Good luck testing out the drag! Catch a few tanks and let us know how the drag rates!

i agree with you. I have purchased two of the new energys and they are by far my favorite reels that I have owned. Just smooth as can be. On of my needed lube for the spool shaft out of the box but its awesome now that its all lubed up with hot sauce. I used my power mode for a bit cranking and its paired with KVD launcher that setup is just light as can be and super sensitive. I have to fight myself not to fish a crank when I know other things would be better.

Very good writeup!

I bought the 09 Catalyst b/c reel a month ago.  I spooled 30 lb (8 dia mono) Sufix, it's the 7.1:1 burner.  I have last years Energy PT b/c reel & it is a big difference in weight & feel w/ the 09 Catalyst.  Since I'm using braid I tend to keep the braking set higher to 6 & have not backlashed, as long as I keep the spool tension in check.  I can cast the Catalyst pretty good.

I have to say it's on par w/ the Citica 201E but it's $30 more for the Catalyst & it weighs about the same as the 201E.

I was really thinking of getting the 09 Tour Edition buyt read a BPS review about the TE from 1 guy who bought 2 of these reels & had both of them have broken handles right out of the box.

I'm hoping to put the 09 Catalyst through the paces in the next few weeks.  But so far I like the reel.

That is about the exact same review that I have for this reel. However, I do like the looks of the older models a little more. I do agree with the ACS braking system. If it had more settings for better adjustability it would be great.

I want to get one now too, is this better than an STX or SX?

I was going to get an STX but decided on the Energy. The Energy felt better to me but they are both good.
