Hey, I was thinking about tactics to try during the spawn. Last spawn I had times where I hooked a sunny through the lip, and dragged him near the bass nests. The bass would chase him and he would run out of the nest before the bass could grab him. I'd keep trying to force him back on the nest, but he'd immediately run as the bass came darting after him. So I thought if I can find a softbait that looks just like a bluegill or sunfish, I can probably work it in the nests with amazing results. Particularly a small size also, so the small bass around here will attack it no questions asked. All I found so far that looked something like what I wanted was a basstrix bait fry bluegill http://www.***.com/descpageSWMBSSTRX-BTB.html. But I can't seem to find it anywhere, even on ebay. But if you know of any other soft jerkbait that is fairly small in size (under 5inches), and looks like a real bluegill (good quality design). Then let me know. Thanks.

By weight, these are not small compared to the basstrix bluegills.  Buy if you want something realistic looking that is used by a lot of the big bass guys on here....

Try the Mattlures Ultimate Bluegill.  At rest, it sits nose down just like a live one.  They are around 2oz, but only about 5 inches long.

Get your flippin stick and get to work!!!!!!

Can you fish the matt lures bluegill real slow, and pause it etc on the nest? Or do you have to fish it with a steady retrieve? I don't think theyll go for it if I just swim it through the nest, I think it has to stay in there for a few seconds or so, can you fish it like a softjerk bait is what I mean.

Matt's Bluegill is the bait you need. They will chase it just like the live bluegill you hooked if you swim it since it swims back at a slow speed. I fished for an eight pounder for four hours last year and the fish wouldn't move from the bed but wouldn't react to a bait either until I pulled the Matt's bluegill by the fish one time. It followed it all the way back to the boat on the first cast and I had the bait sitting in the bed before it got back to the bed on the second cast. It hit it as soon as it got back to the bed and saw the bluegill just sitting there and not moving. The bait will sit on the nest upright and not fall over just like it is feeding on the eggs. There are photos on Matt's websight that shows it sitting on the bottom if you want to see how it sits. His website is www.mattlures.com. If the small bass has a hard time eating the bait then use the Mattlures Bluegill to get him agressive then throw a smaller bait back to catch it.

Storm makes some small swimbaits.  I have bluegill and crappie,  got them for fathers day and still have not tried them.

The baitfry is a cool bait, the only one I like from basstrix in fact.

But its hard to beat the Matt ultimate bluegill on the bed.

Well I looked at them and they look great so I might buy one. I have 1 question though before I do this. Majority of the bass in the lakes im fishing are 5lbs being the biggest, but most are 2-3, do you think a 2-3lber can swallow this lure? I'd say majority of the fish I see on the beds are 2-3lbers, some being 3 1/2 and very few being 4-5. So im mostly wanting to keep it so the bait is just small enough for a 2-3lber to take, cause thats majority of the lake. So what do you think, can a 2-3lber take down this lure?

heres a nice little (2.5 to 3 inches roughly) bluegill lure:

hand tied by yours truly ;)

put this sucker on a small dropshot rig. then move the weight to the edge of the bed on taught line......ease the rod tip down so the bluegill slowly goes nose first into the bed....the bass is eye'n it now...twitch it....pull it out of the bed and repeat. bass should smack this bait. :D
