Hey yall! Well i have this ABU 5000 reel. It was my FIRST baitcaster. An prob 2 years ago i tried to clean it. It was the FIRST reel id tried to clean. Well to say the least i messed it up.

Until today it had been sitting in my shed doing nothing. So i took it back out today and played with it. I ended up getting it all back together correctly, "i think". hahaha

Except now when i reel it can go "both ways".

~Yea i know, insert joke here~

So the handle will allow me to turn it both fowards and backwards. Did i break something? Did i lose a part? Is it on wrong?

I have no idea! Any help would be grateful! Thanks!

Heres a picture of the reel!

You probably have the anti-reverse pawl on backwards. Pull the crank side apart again and send a picture.

We'll get you set up. I've had those Abu's apart 100 times or more.

It is either backwards or you failed to snug it up to the washer that has the indentions in it.

While you have the side plate off check the two bent washers that mount on the top of the gear shaft. They are right under the star drag adjustment. Put them back like this (), not like this ((. Very important and most people don't pay attention to this minor detail.

If you can't figure it out, just send it to me and I will set it up for you. No charge.

Okay well i took it apart, looked at it, and tried to figure out what yall were talkin about but it seems to be just going right over my head!

I cant find/figure out the parts your talkin of, so either they arent there or im just not seeing them.

But i got the photos here. If you guys cant tell from the photos, i might just have to take you up on that offer FishForDollars!  :D

Thanks guys!

If you don't have a schematic for the reel, find one ASAP.

Never tear a reel down without the schematic.

I don't see the pawl at all in the 3rd picture.  Do you have any parts extra?  <>< del

No, i had taken this reel apart first years ago. So i guess i either lost it then, or just over time lost it.

Im not exactly sure what the pawl (looks like) is, so even if i did have it somewhere i dont think id realize lol.

Am i able to order this part from Abu?

What you're missing is the anti-reverse dog,It goes on that short brass post on the right side bottom of the brake plate in the 3rd picture. It's silver with 2 brass arms that go on each side of the drive shaft wheel (the round part with the teeth). When you put it on,the brass arms should be pointed toward the bottom of the brake plate, then you swing it upward toward the drive gear teeth.Spread the brass arms apart so 1 arm goes on top of the teeth, and 1 below. You can get them on Ebay,or from Abugarcia.I believe it's part #5134.Here's a picture of what it should look like when it's in properly.

Just take your reel to reel mech. He could tell you what is missing right away. Have in upgrade the bearings and the drag and that thing will be better than when you first had it. He did it with my Abu G round reel and is now one bad mamma jamma of a reel now.

x2 on the schematic.

Stole one of the pics, looking closely the AR dog is missing.

There are 2 styles that I have seen used in the 5000 series reels over the years (depending on circa date)..

oldschoolbasser pic shows what one of them looks like and the part number for that one is correct...

Good Luck .....
