Super User slonezp Posted March 12, 2009 Super User Posted March 12, 2009 Just purchased a Fenwick HMG AV 7'6'' flipping rod and am looking for a flipping reel to go with it. I'm relatively new to flipping and haven't found a whole lot of info on the internet. Not a big fan of Quantum but have heard good things about the Accurist. Also Shimano Castaic or Chronarch. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Quote
MillerTime Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 Check out the Abu Garcia REVO lineup. They're smooth as any other reel i've used and have a wicked strong drag which is pretty important when horsing fish out of heavy cover. Just about any of the mid-high end reels from Shimano or Daiwa should suit u as well. Quote
RobbyZ5001 Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 I use a revo s on my flipping stick. I think I would stay away from a chronarch on a flipping stick. I am not sure if its beefy enough to get bass out of the muck. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted March 13, 2009 Super User Posted March 13, 2009 I use a Revo S on mine as well. Strong drag is a big plus with this technique. I would steer away from the Accurist, unless they have improved them considerably. I had two of the gold ones w/ a flipping switch and the guts of the reel did not hold up well for me. Returned both of them. Quote
SteveF Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 My flipping sticks have Daiwa Zillions on them, and of course left handed as always. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 13, 2009 Super User Posted March 13, 2009 If you pitch and flip, casting with your right hand, you'll appreciate a left handed reel. I use two older TD-X103HSDL that have the thumbar on the top of the reel, so I can palm with my right without moving it to cast. Another cool aspect about any modern Daiwa, is that you can engage the spool simply by flicking the thumbar back up with your thumb. Try that with a Shimano Quote
Vinfisherman Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 My current flipping combo is a shimano Castaic 200sf on a 7'6 diawa LT stick spooled up with 50lb Power Pro. The shimano is performs great. Last week at the BPS classic I picked up a cumara flipping stick and purchased 2 reels. I wanted to purchase 2 shimano core 100mgs but at $479 CDN !!!!!! i just couldn't do it. Because shimano is participating in the reel exchange in canada i did get 1. The other reel i bought was the REVO premier. MillerTime is right. 6.3 oz so its really light. At 279 its 200 dollars cheaper than the core, 24lbs of drag???!!! it will Horse them out of heavy cover, plus if you do any salt water fishing the reels frame will handle the salt water and drag will handle the snook. The castaic is a great flipping reel for the price. If you want to spend a little more, the revo premiere has a lot of options found in reels that are a lot more expensive. Bring your rod when you choose reel. You can feel which reel is the right fit. Quote
mdstud007 Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 I picked up one of the Ardent F500 a few weeks back....$149.99. It's designed for flipping. I love it!!!! Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 Don't even think twice about it. Just go get you a Revo SX or STX and some strong fluoro or braid. If you want winching power get the low speed Revo Winch. I use a Shimano crucial flippin' stick and a Revo STX and those fish don't stand a chance! The Revo has one of the best Drag systems out right now. Quote

I love mine but it is no fun trying to winch a big bass out of cover with one! Quote
