Jerkbait rod reel

I am planning on getting a Mojo for jerkabits and topwater.  What casting reel under $100 would be a good match for this rod?  Is braid the best bet for topwater baits in heavy cover?  Thanks for any input.

I don't like braid and I think line visibility is very important

fishing jerkbaits. Go with something matching the water (Yo-Zuri

Hybrid) or fluorocarbon line.

I use a St. Croix Avid AVC62MXF and a Daiwa Black Widow.  You can get Black Widows at Tackle Warehouse for $99.99 right now.  Its basically the old TD-A (Tierra now) with an extra bearing and a sweet paint job.  You should also consider a Shimano Citica.  Anything 6:1 or faster is fine for jerkbaits.  I use 12# P-line CXX X-Tuf.  Braid + fast action rod + treble hooks = lost fish.

I would suggest getting the lightest reel and rod combo possible. If you ever have to throw a jerkbait all day you will thank me later.

To offer a different opinion, I haven't found that at all. My go-to jerkbait setup included 10 lb test Power Pro with a long flourocarbon leader (you will notice some stretch with a long leader) on a fast action spinning rod. I catch smallies all summer on jerkbaits with this setup, and can't say I've ever lost one due to the no-stretch factor. Of course, one can never be sure. One thing though, if you use braid with jerkbaits or any treble hook lures - don't give a big hookset. All you really have to do is give a little pressure, or a gentle sweep set, and you're hooked up  

I like braid with jerkbaits because it gives you more control, and when you work the lure, the connection is much more immediate, allowing you to impart subtle action that would be impossible to do with mono/flouro on a long cast.

And for topwaters (and basically everything), I like braid as well. It floats, and you can cast it wayyyy out there and set the hook like nothing  8-)

Honestly other than an Asaro Pflueger I don't think I would find a better reel than the BPS ProLite.

With an extra set of drag washers, a pawl, and a couple upgraded bearings it would last forever.

The best features.....It's light, built on a smaller frame than almost everything else out there, and doesn't pick up a ton of line......Not crankbait slow, but not fast.

And beyond that it's got features that you want in any reel, aluminum frame, forged handle/drag star, 7 bearings.......The dual braking works really well, and you can absolutely BOMB X-raps with it.....Had to take it out last weekend and see what's up.

I'm with RW on this one.

Jerkbaits draw the fish to them with the action/noise of the jerks but once that fish is within sight distance I wouldn't want highly visible line hanging off the front of it.  Clear line or Flouro would be best though I don't like the flouro tendency to sink.  I normally use a clear copoly and have never had problems.

Based on some input from RW I am going to use Yo-Zuri Original Hybrid.

I am using a Avid 6' 6" M/F Rod and a Shimano Curado 201E7 for my top water this year.  Should be an interesting spring.

I use a 6'9 E21 carrot w/ Diawa TDA. Spooled with 10# 100% Trilene Flouro. In my opinion its the best fishing line that has came along yet.
