BASSMAFIA Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 this weekend i was in my BFL tournament and fishing along and my shimano reel just stopped working... and boy did i get really frustrated!!! Those stupid PLASTIC gears they used for turning the worm gear, most of the teeth were missing when i opened up when i got home!!!! So anyway i want a new reel... And Im choosing between the quantum pt catalyst or the revo s, which one would yall pick.... why would yall pick quantum or abu!!! thanks Quote
dmac14 Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Ouch that stinks to lose a reel during a tourney. I would see which one you like best, I like quantum but have never tried Abu, my friend fishes with Abu and likes it also. So depends on which one you would prefer. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 9, 2009 Super User Posted March 9, 2009 Hmm... There must be a little more to the story. Post what happened in the Shimano section and be specific. I'm sure the issue has a solution. Quote
Super User Raul Posted March 9, 2009 Super User Posted March 9, 2009 And that little plastic gear used to turn the worm gear are found in all baitcasters I 've seen since 1980. Quote
Super User Sam Posted March 9, 2009 Super User Posted March 9, 2009 Bassmafia, This illustrates why I take extra reels with me when fishing. I am taking three extra baitcasters and two extra spinning reels with me for a tournament this weekend. It is far easier to change the reel than to fight a backlash, twisted line or have a reel fail. BASSMAFIA Posted March 9, 2009 Author Posted March 9, 2009 you bet i will have extras even if its a cheapo reel.... better safe than sorry... So really do all reel shave that plastic gear for the worm gears Quote
Super User Raul Posted March 9, 2009 Super User Posted March 9, 2009 you bet i will have extras even if its a cheapo reel.... better safe than sorry... So really do all reel shave that plastic gear for the worm gears As I said, all the reels I 've known since 1980 ( Abu, Ryobi, Daiwa, Shimano and Quantum ) have that gear made of plastic, actually that gear and the one that moves it ( under the main gear ) are both nylon gears. There 's a reason why it 's made from plastic, if something happens the plastic gear breaks before your worm gear does or your main gear does, it 's a fail safe mechanism to protect the metal gears of the reel. It doesn 't mean that because the reel has a couple of nylon gears it 's made cheaply. Quote
BASSMAFIA Posted March 9, 2009 Author Posted March 9, 2009 shimano citica 100 reel ( the little one) Quote

SWMIBASSER Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 It can't be! The best thing to hit fishing (shimano) since the hook let you down?! Quote
Ineedanewscreenname20170204 Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 1) Shimano Citica 200e (ok maybe the Curado...) 2) Hook Quote
Super User cart7t Posted March 10, 2009 Super User Posted March 10, 2009 Do we really need to clutter up the rod and reel board with ALL these shimano owners complaining about their broken reels? I thought they created a Shimano fixit board due to the high traffic from frustrated Shemano owners. Take it there please. Quote
westpalmfrogpunk Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 I just got a new quantum and I can tell you I really like it . I purchased the new energy and it is the smoothest reel that I have ever owned right out of the box. I own 3 other quantums and only had the cheap one have the gears not fully engage at first crank. This model is and older one. I also own a kvd model that I got as a gift It gets used hard and still works good. Its needs a good cleaning though Quote
