jeremyt Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 I have a couple of ?'s about jigs. What size jigs are good for learning. I have watched LBH jig video and have read the articles here. I have tried a few jigs for about a month off and on now with no sucess. I really want to learn this technique. I think the jigs would work good for the pond I fish. It has a lot of rocks, and all the other baits that were working the past month or so have died out for me. I know I am not going to be able to go out tomorrow and flip one out and smack a hawg, but I really have no clue what I am doing right or wrong. Quote
Jake. Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 I learned on Eakins Jigs and still use them today. They have produced great for me around rock and brush alike. I use the 5/16th oz. size paired with the Eakins Craw Trailer. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted December 6, 2007 Super User Posted December 6, 2007 Eakins jig or the similar one made by Booyah. The problem I had learning jigs is that I started off disadvantaged. Don't worry about or use what KVD or the "pros" are using. Get yourself some 1/4 or 5/16oz finesse jigs like the Eakins in a color you are confident in along with some trailers. I am sure the Eakins craw trailer works but I have always used a Zoom super chunk jr or similar Yum craw. The smaller lighter bait in a confident color will catch you fish and after awhile when your confidence and skill have improved then try the full sized versions. If for some reason you cannot find a color that you like contact me and I will make you some as I have close to 100 different skirt colors. Allen Quote
=Matt 5.0= Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 The presentation and action of the jig are only as good as the rod being used. If you're using something like an Ugly Stick, you're gonna have a very hard time....just my opinion...speaking from experience. Quote
santeebasser24 Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 I learned to jig fish with a 1/4 ounce Terminator Finesse Jig (green pumpkin/pepper) with a zoom speed craw trailer bit it half, and dye the claws in chart. garlic Spike-It. I got intorduced to KaRu Lures Poison Tail Jig, and the detail they put into thier jigs really put the fish in the bait, because they aven't seen anything like it before! It takes time, but once you get the hang of it and get confidence in it, you will begin to catch quality fish! Quote
Super User Tin Posted December 11, 2007 Super User Posted December 11, 2007 The hardest thing to do with a jig is catch your first fish. Keep it simple, 1/4 oz, black with black trailer. And with all the rocks in your lake, go for a football head design. And flip or pitch to the big individual rocks or drag them around or down rockpiles and rockwalls. Like I said fish it like a rubber worm and it will produce, Quote
Shad_Master Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 This doesn't really answer your specific question, but it might help - it did for me. Try using a braided line for jig fishing - I use 20# (6# diameter) Power Pro - you will be surprised at how easy it is to feel the bite and this can lead to confidence. Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted December 11, 2007 Super User Posted December 11, 2007 strike king bitsy bugs and bitsy flips.I really suck at jigs, and have complained for a while now.I recently started using the 1/16 and 1/8 bitsys and have been hammering them.No lunkers but plenty of action. Those little jigs just flat out catch fish period if the optimal color is applied. Now I believe all the peeps that told me so Quote
TournyFish001 Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 you can't go wrong with the eakins jig- Quote
basscatcher8 Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 The hardest thing i had to get use to when i started to fish jigs was determining what your hitting. I had to learn the feel to tell between smacking a rock or a stump and when a fish hits. Once i got that down ive done alright on a jig. Quote
lostanother Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 When I started jigging I used a 3/8 ounce,I felt that it was easier for me to feel the bottom and really pay attention to what I was doing. The next challenge that came was hook up so I started trimming the fiber gaurd and its been all jigs since. And Power pro is a great way to help feel what going on below! Try a few different jig type till you find the one you like and stick with it. I prefer All-Terrian tackles Weed master jig It comes thru the weeds ok and ive had no problem when ordering them! Quote
BassFishingMachine Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 I learned with a 3/16 ounce Booyah Baby Boo Jig, in watermelon/red. I now use alot of Booyah Baby Boo's in 3/16 -5/16ounce, in black/blue, watermelon/red, and any shades of brown. I also use alot of Strikeking Bitsy bugs in 1/16 - 1/4ounce particularly in black, black/blue, greenpumpkin, or again shades of brown. And I also like the Terminator jigs. But if your just learning jigs I'd recommend a booyah baby boo 3/16 ounce, they did the trick for me, they should do the trick for you. For color I'd go with black/blue with a 3.5 inch black/blue YUM chunk as trailer, or a Zoom Super Chunk 3.5 inch Black/blue. Quote
Branuss04 Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 you can't go wrong with the eakins jig- +1. I just gained confidence in jigs yesterday after 2 years of heavy bass fishing. I used the eakins got all my fish for the day using a brown and orange with a paca craw. I'm going to start throwing jigs more often now. Quote
