jamarkwe Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 OK....So I am in the market for a new baitcasting reel. The only problem is that I have never owned nor used a one... I have an understand on how one works, but at the same time I know nothing about one.... What would you pros recommend for a newbie?? Trying to stay lower than a buck fifty. also I am planing on puting it on a MH 7' rod... Quote
Super User David P Posted March 4, 2009 Super User Posted March 4, 2009 Higher end baitcasters, at least for me, were easier to learn with. $100 can get you a pretty decent reel, the Revo S and the Citica E would both be great starter reels. The Daiwa Advantage HSTA is $170 but can be found on ebay for $140ish and it too is very easy to cast, and super smooth. There's quite a few options out there. Sometimes you can find great deals in the flea market here as well. Quote
mase088 Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 The ones listed above are probably your best bet. I would add the BPS Extreme to the list as well. Whatever you decide on getting, know that you get what you pay for with B/C reels. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 4, 2009 Super User Posted March 4, 2009 Or start near the top and have a reel, that with proper maintenance, will last a lifetime: http://www.***.com/descpageRLCSHIMANO-SHCSF50.html 8-) Quote
Kelly J Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 i know some are going to deagree with me but my first nice baitcaster i got a quantum code, its not the ferrari of casters but its under $90 and its easy to use and i thought easy to learn with but thats just me. so far its been over a year and ive had no problems with it even though ive updgraded to the tour models its something to think about. kelly Quote

Super User dodgeguy Posted March 4, 2009 Super User Posted March 4, 2009 for $150 you can get the new pflueger president which is a great reel.for $100 you can get a pflueger trion narrow spool which is a great reel. Quote
Sharkbite Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 When I started using a baitcaster it was a nigthmare b/c I bought a cheap reel. Just ask Muddy about my fishing trip with him lol. Then I used a few others and got a hang of it. Once I got the reel that suited me I did great. That reel is the pfleuger trion. Its a wide spool modle which is what I needed for the size of my hands and all. Plus the centifulic brakes helped me alot. Now I have 3 Trions. I also got mine used. They are a strong rugged reel. Ern Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 I agree with others........get a better one to start. Lots of good reels to pick. I have had Abu's, Quantum, Diawa, and Shimano and had great luck with them all. I am loving my new Curado and plan on maybe a Revo STX next month. Ern Quote
-HAWK- Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Shimano Curado E7. This is an awesome reel to get started with. Quote
trailblazer Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 I am also new to baitcasting and plan on going to BPS to get a reel this weekend. I had been looking at the rick clunn signature series. should I steer clear of it? It has some good reviews and is an 8 ball bearing reel but its on sale for 79.99. Anyone have one? Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted March 4, 2009 Super User Posted March 4, 2009 I started with a code and it's an ok reel....I would look for a patriarch on ebay...the ubs is almost fool-proof Quote
sal669 Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Before you "pull the triger" go to a tackle store and play a little with a right hand and a left hand model (mounted on a rod) to determine wich hand you want to crank with. The typical baitcaster is right handed (you crank with your right hand while you hod the rod in your left hand). If you fished a lot with spinning reels you might find the a left hand reel is wat you preffer. That would be me. The disadvantage is that not all reel models come in LH. Would be nice to find a "coach"/ fishing buddy to show you the ropes. Besides this, you got some good advice allready. Before you get out on the water, practice in your backyard. You don't want to spend a good fishing day "fixin'" bird nests. Good luck, Alex Quote
ChiCityBasser Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 My first B/C was a Cabelas Prodigy for $79.99 and it is a pretty good reel to learn to use and like someone said spend the time practicing cause that will take alot of the frustration of learning out of the equation. I think BPS and Cabelas might still have the Quantum Accurist PT on sale for around $50-60 and its a pretty good reel. You can also fine the Quantum Accurist 2 on ebay as low as $45 and check the reviews on the Accurist 2 on http://tackletour.com Good Luck Quote
jamarkwe Posted March 4, 2009 Author Posted March 4, 2009 Oh man...decisions, decisions.... Thanks for all the great advice guys. Quote
jamarkwe Posted March 4, 2009 Author Posted March 4, 2009 Or start near the top and have a reel, that with proper maintenance, will last a lifetime: 8-) Yeah I was looking at that one last night and seems to be a good reel to go with. Never owned a shimano anything, I might have to take the plunge and get it. What does everybody think about Quantum's energy reels... I own 2 of the pt20 spinning reels, and if the baitcasters are as nice as the spinning reels I might go that route... I can never make a decision.... :-/ Quote
jamarkwe Posted March 4, 2009 Author Posted March 4, 2009 for $150 you can get the new pflueger president which is a great reel.for $100 you can get a pflueger trion narrow spool which is a great reel. Ahhhh.... Pflueger president... I own 2 of their 6735 spinning reels and think they are a great reel for 60 bucks. I gotta do some hands-on research at BassPRO and get the feel for these reels everyone here speaks of.. Quote
Kelly J Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 i really like my energy reel, i got the 7.1 and am very happy Quote
