Since I live in the Pac NW, I would have to tell you fat chance of finding anything Bass worthy for cranks save an ugly stick. Try looking at your local shops. Quote

Depending on where you are located, the BPS spring classic starts in five days, I would imagine that you will be able to get the BPS Crankin stick for 40 bucks. If there are no bps stores near you, the nearest one to me is 3 hour drive, then the Walmart should have some Berkley Lightning rods, or Quantum Torsion rods for about 25 bucks. These rods are dead sticks, no sensitivity, but should suffice for a cranking rod. Good Luck. Quote

A crankbait rod is so stupid simple there is no sense in paying big bucks for one. You don't want a rod super sensitive or with a fast action to prevent pulling the crank away from fish..... To me that means that a crankbait rod is one of the only rods I consider cheap to be just fine...... I fish all my cranks with a snap for more action. And it makes it easy to change. So I only need one crankin' rod.......A Pflueger Tim Horton rod I bought a couple years ago that was on sale...Like $40 Quote
coolhandlala Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Like calcutta said the conolon is actually not bad I have a buddy who swears by it. He has I think 5 of them. He uses it for everything from plastics to throwing musky lures. I have have tried it before and for the money is actually pretty good. That being said if you are used to a high dollar rod you will find faults with it, but for @$40 if seems way better than the indestructible UGLY STICK. After that I would say go with the ugly stick, you can't break them and they have a good soft tip that would work good for cranks, and when you save up the money to upgrade you can hang on to the ugly stick for pond fishing, a guest rod, or they are a great rod for kids to learn with b/c they have a lot of give, you can't break them and you can cast them a country mile. JMO But really the conolon is not a bad rod for the money. Quote

Super User retiredbosn Posted February 22, 2009 Super User Posted February 22, 2009 Also just to let you know, BPS has last years KVD signature cranking stick on sale for 60 bucks, the crankin stick can be had several times a year for 40. Cheap is also a relative term, all of my rods would be considered cheap to some. I typically buy last year's models at close outs this time of year, I have never paid more than half price for any of my rods. Then again I'm not a tournament guy just fish for fun, but I do like good products, my jig rod is a tour grade pt I got for 40 bucks new, that is the type of deals I look for. Good luck Quote

This is what I use as a crankbait rod. They also stock 6'6" MH, and 7' MH. My WM price is 41.94 per rod. My personal preference are these rods. Quote

On the days when the bite can be confused with snagging grass, a sensitive stick can make all the difference in the world. You don't need a fast action. But I'm sold on having a sensitive stick. I paid $110 for my Powell 684CB and $150 for my Loomis 964. To answer the original post, Get yourself an Ugly Stik until you're ready to get a duplicate like your old stick or just use a spinning rod. Most of them are a little slower than their casting counterparts. Quote

I know of an instance where they had marked hurricane redbones (90 retail) for 10 bucks. it pays to drift in every once in while and take a look. If I wanted a rod just to get me by I would consider shimano scimitar 29.95. I have caught many fish in excess of 10lb, up to 40 on their 6'6 6-14 rod. I have a 10-20 7' scimitar used 2 times anyone in my area can have it for free. The bad rap is that in time the ceramic inserts will crack and fall off....Sports Authority carries them. Any rod under 60 or 70 bucks is a disposable rod anyway. Quote
marktfd Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 The Berkeley Lighting Rod would be a good buy. The 6'6" or 7' in med to ned Hvy would be my choice depending on the type of cranks your throwing. I prefer the 7' med hvy because I throw alot of deep divers. Mark Quote
