JF1 Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 I have a bunch of baitcasters that I usually send out to have cleaned and the such before every season. This year I want to tackle this job myself. Anyone have any websights with tips, maybe some pics or a goot "how-to" for cleaning baitcast reels and lubing. I know I don't want to over grease/lube these reels. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Quote
SimonSays Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 If you have shimano reels the shimano website has PDF tutorials with pictures to help with simple lubing. Unsure of cleaning though Quote
MitchIsFishin Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Check out this site: http://www.reelmechanic.com/ ReelMech is a member here & sells oils, grease, tools and a book that covers what you'll need to know. Also, Burley offers this as a quick guide: http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1234086142 Make sure you've got the schematic for your reel/reels before you start. Quote
JF1 Posted February 14, 2009 Author Posted February 14, 2009 Thanks. I'm going to tackle this tomorrow since I don't have any football to watch :'( I'll let u know how it turns out. Quote
SWMIBASSER Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 It's all about confidence. And experience. I started taking apart my Abu round reels when I was adolescent. The experience dealing with a stone simple design that goes together everytime has given me the confidence to takle any reel. You just have to pay attention to how it comes apart. Quote
hercdoc Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 How can you clean reels when then Daytona 500 is being run on this sacred Sunday! Quote
JF1 Posted February 15, 2009 Author Posted February 15, 2009 Quote How can you clean reels when then Daytona 500 is being run on this sacred Sunday! Very simple.... Turn on 500 while cleaning reels. I can listen while working and if anything big happens rewind (thank god for tivo) and watch again. Quote
JF1 Posted February 16, 2009 Author Posted February 16, 2009 Ok, ran into a problem. Did an old baitcaster I had laying around first to get the hand of this, it was a daiwa megaforce reel. Went back together no problem. Went outside tried it out seems to be fine. Next reel was a quantum accurist, again no major problems seems to be good. Then I tried a daiwa procaster 100h. I got the right side all tore apart no problem. Handle, gears, etc all tore down. The palm side, different story. I can't get the spool out. I can't even get to the magnetic brake. I removed the screw on the outside, but the case doesn't want to split. Do you have any experience with this reel? See this link for the schematic: http://www.mikesreelrepair.com/schematics/albums/daiwa/Daiwa_Procaster_100H%2C_100HN.pdf Quote
JF1 Posted February 16, 2009 Author Posted February 16, 2009 Nevermind, I got it. I just needed to walk away from the project for a bit and take a brake. When I went back I figured it out in a second. The palm plate needed to be turned 1/4 turn....duh Quote
OnthePotomac Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 I bought a reel cleaning DVD from these people and it was a wise investment. Very detailed. http://www.lakeforktacklerepair.com/ Quote

cwen Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 I too bought that video. Very informative. Definitely saves me money. I like to keep a clean workspace too. Best thing i did was buy a small hobby screwdrive from home depot. it was a Kobalt. it cost $5 and it had 4 bits with a flathead and phillips on either side. The bits vary in size and cover all the bit sizes and styles needed for taking reels apart. Quote
