SWMIBASSER Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Is there a handle option available for these reels? I'd like to add a longer power type handle to pick up more line per turn of the handle..... Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted February 15, 2009 Super User Posted February 15, 2009 What does the handle have to do with more line per turn ? Please explain. Quote
SWMIBASSER Posted February 15, 2009 Author Posted February 15, 2009 A longer handle will pick up more line per turn of the handle. To visualize imagine how much distance a civic tire covers in one turn, as compared to the distance covered by a 35" truck tire. Quote

I don't know too much about physics so I'm probably dead wrong but wouldn't the extra time it takes you to rotate a larger handle negate any gains in speed over a smaller handle. To me it would be like running 4 quarter mile laps versus one one mile lap. Ones bigger than the other but your going to arrive at the finish in more or less the same amount of time. Quote

You're thinking about this all wrong. the truck tire vs. civic tire example doesn't apply here, because the handle size does not change the gear size. a larger main gear will turn a pinion gear of the same size more times per turn of the main gear, which would be the equivalent of your tire analogy. Increasing the handle length will not have any effect on the size of the gears in relation to each other. What it will do is make it take longer to turn the handle one revolution because of the extra distance that needs to be covered vs. a shorter handle, so if you are reeling at your normal pace, you are actually turning less RPM's and reeling slower than you would with a shorter handle. A longer handle will give you more power though because of the added torque. Quote
shadyhaven Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 a longer handle will not get you anymore line, just leverage. the line retrieval is all in the gears and speed the handle is turning. the longer the handle the longer it takes for a full rotation of the gear. however a longer handle will give you more control ie...back reeling. MarauderYak Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 If you still want a power handle, BPS does carry them. I can't post a link since this is my first post. Quote
MSPbass Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Yeah, it won't get you more line in, but BPS does have them. It might say for "Shakespeare", rather than Pflueger, but it will work. I think Gator Grips has one too. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 17, 2009 Super User Posted February 17, 2009 As was said, the longer handle will result in more hand travel and greater leverage during the retrieve, not more line pickup. You'll have to specify which model reel you wish to upgrade, as many Floogers use a proprietary, nutless connection. (I can't believe I just said that!) ;D Quote
SWMIBASSER Posted February 17, 2009 Author Posted February 17, 2009 The handle that simply screws on is the one I'm referring to. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 17, 2009 Super User Posted February 17, 2009 If you mean the one like that on the President, where you have to pull the drag star close to the body to unscrew the handle, then I think you might have a hard time finding an after market handle that will fit. If it is a separate handle and brass nut arrangement, then this will do: http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_96598_100001007_100000000_100001000_100-1-7 Quote
