jb_adams Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 I was lucky enough to meet Jimmy Houston this week. He's a really great guy and very approachable. He really cares about people and he's extremely easy to talk to. More than willing you give you tips and talk fishing or hunting. I also won a 6'6" Jimmy Houston Signature Series Shimano fishing rod with a Shimano Cruxis baitcasting reel as a door prize. Pretty cool right! So I got Jimmy to sign the rod on the cork right above the reel seat. He told me I could use a clear fingernail polish and that would seal it on the rod. So should I enjoy the rod and use it? Or should I keep it safe and have it framed and mount it on the wall as a collectors item? If I use it, do you think the clear fingernail polish would work? Surely someone here has run across something like this before. Thanks all! ;D Quote
drmnbig Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 Do like he said. Seal it and fish the heck out of it! Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 For me, it would depend on the celeb. I would only use the Jimmy rod at the hatchery, where the fish are caged. DOH! Just kidding, I have a signed Torpedo lure,...I refuse to use it. :-/ Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted February 14, 2009 Super User Posted February 14, 2009 If you need to use it then use it but if it's an extra just place it aside Quote
Super User flechero Posted February 14, 2009 Super User Posted February 14, 2009 I have no opinion on whether to use it or not, but don't use nail polish to seal it. I'd use U-40 or Tru oil, but test it on an old piece of cork with sharpie (assuming he signed with a sharpie) to be sure the sealer didn't eat the ink. Quote
Super User Raul Posted February 14, 2009 Super User Posted February 14, 2009 I have the famous T cap from Bill Dance, autographed and all, I made a custom frame for it and I ain 't wearing it. Quote
ProCrafter Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 The man is gettin old....I know...he has'nt changed in 40 years but he is an Icon, and I would have gotten a photo of us together and placed it with the rod....just me though....I had a bowl of Stagg Chili with him and had him autograph a can of chili...a hat....and have lost track of both.... WHO ELSE HAS AN AUTOGRAPHED CAN OF CHILI BY JIMMY HOUSTON? Quote
IdahoLunkerHunter Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 I'd fish the hell out of it... he would want that! Quote
Super User flechero Posted February 14, 2009 Super User Posted February 14, 2009 I'd fish the hell out of it... he would want that! You are probably right, I hunted the heck out of a bow I had Ted Nugent autograph... it never missed after he touched it. Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 14, 2009 Super User Posted February 14, 2009 Wait for Jimmy to die. Sell the rod as a memorabelia collectors item. Take the proceeds and buy a G. Loomis rod. Quote
Super User firefightn15 Posted February 14, 2009 Super User Posted February 14, 2009 I'd fish the hell out of it... he would want that! First I would have someone take a couple of real nice pics of me holding the rod, just for posterity, and then my votes with Idaho***er! Quote
daviscw Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 IMO, if you really have to think hard about how important it is to you, then it really isn't that important. Know what I mean? Quote
Super User CWB Posted February 14, 2009 Super User Posted February 14, 2009 I'd keep it for posterity. Chances are you have enough rigs already that you don't really need it and luck like that doesn't happen every day. If you do need it and if it is an upgrade to what you already have, fish it! Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 14, 2009 Super User Posted February 14, 2009 I have the famous T cap from Bill Dance, autographed and all, I made a custom frame for it and I ain 't wearing it. I have always wondered who had the other one. 8-) Quote
bass wrangler569 Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 I personally wouldn't use it unless you really need it. It will probably be worth money some day. Quote
BassnMan Mike Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 It would depend on how many other rods you have. If you need it then use it. Me personally, I have quite a few quality rods so if I had it I would probably not use it Quote
IdahoLunkerHunter Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Actually, fish the hell out of the rod and if you already have a good set-up give one of your old rods to a kid you see at the dock, spread the joy of upgrades! Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted February 15, 2009 Super User Posted February 15, 2009 Put a protective non marring wrap on the cork and fish it. Who knows what kind of mojo Jimmy put on that rod!!!! Make sure the wrap is easily removed so you can show the autograph on the rod while holding that lunker of a lifetime and send the picture to Jimmy, he'll sign that too. I'm not familiar with that particular rod, but if it is the same quality as the Roland Martin rod, I wouldn't fish with it, you probably already have better rods. Quote
jb_adams Posted February 16, 2009 Author Posted February 16, 2009 Thanks everyone! If it were a hat, a lure, a picture, etc., it would be a no brainer for me to not use it. But this seems like a really nice quality rod and I've got 3 St. Croix Avid series rods, a good Falcon rod, a few cheap Berkly and Abu rods so this rod combo would make a good addition to my arsenal and replace a few cheaper rods. I will probably spool it up with line and see how sensitive it is. If it's as good as I think it will be (I'm thinking it will match my Avids), then it will get used occassionaly but not a lot. I wouldn't sell it for anything amount of money so that's out. I tend to agree, I think Jimmy would want me to use it. He's a true fisherman and has been all of his life. If he hadn't signed it, I would MOST definately get used at the first chance I had. It's getting his signature on it that made it personal and extra special too me. Besides, I've still got an autographed book of his. I also have a signed t-shirt with his signature and several other pros. Forgot to mention that. I also agree.......I think he put the Jimmy Houston "giggle mojo" on it and now I feel like kissing a fish! I think I'll stow it in the rod locker on rare occassions and break it out for hard times or emergency situations. With that kind of luck, it's bound to be a winner. If you are lucky enough to win a $200 rod/reel combo (I never win anything), that's lucky. If you are even luckier and you are able to get Jimmy to sign it, that's too much luck packed into one rod to let it just sit around......that's like making bad mojo. Maybe I'll get him to sign a hat next time he's in town. He should be back around during the Walmart Open this year. He's here every year. Quote
fishizzle Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 Hold onto it until he moves on to a better place then it will be worth 10 Legends Quote
OK Bass Hunter Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 Frame it. It's a great conversation piece plus a part of your fishing history. You can always buy another rod IMHO, but you'll probably never win a rod and get it signed by Jimmy Houston all in the same day. Quote
skno Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 frame it, try to have it authinticated, it my opinion it will have historical value or something like that. Quote
NOVA Angler Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 Only you can decide. It all depends on how special it is to you...not us. Quote
seyone Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I'm not a big fan so I would either use the rod if I needed it, or I would try to sell it to buy something I did need. Quote
