Hi guys looking to get my first baitcasting reel. I have narrowed my choices down to the BPS Tourney special, and the megacast. Was wondering if any of you have any experince with either of them

I am guessing that your price range is somewhere between 30 and 50 dollars?  Its often hard to get a quality reel that will last a decent amount of time for that price.  I doubt many here have used these as well.  That is not saying that they are certain to be junk but I believe in some cases you get what you pay for.

What I would suggest doing is perhaps waiting and saving up a little more money.  The reason for this is that the BPS Extreme is the next reel "up" from the two you listed and I know its a good one.  Its on sale right now for 80 bucks and I feel that it would be your best bet.  I as well as a lot of people on this site have used them and it has been highly recommended numerous times.

Good luck on your purchase.

Like Big Tom said, save up for the extreme. First of all, the reels you mentioned (along with pretty much any reel in that price range) are going to have major durability problems and are going to start falling apart with any kind of rigorous use. Secondly, seeing as you are going to be just learning to baitcast, a cheap reel will make it much more difficult to learn. Extremes are excellent reels for the price and they will hold up for a long time.

Learning how to use a baitcaster is much easier done with a quality reel.  As other people said, check the flea market here, you can get some killer deals.

I clicked on your link muddy and started reading some of the reviews.

I loved this one.

"i had this reel for about 5 months and only used it about 15 times and about 2 days ago i was casting and i didn't drop my reel or anything.....and all of a sudden on the next cast the gears where totally messed up....before it got totally messed up it was a great smooth reel."

I spend more time reading customers product reviews on BPS and cabelas than I do this forum. Those reviews are pretty much right on and can be trusted for future purchases.

I picked up a ProLite Finesse casting reel at BPS yesterday. I honestly couldn't be happier. Seems like a great reel. And marked down to $69 from $100 regularly I think it was a good deal to. All the reviews were great except 2. Both complaining of casting distance with ultralight lures. IMO those reviews can be thrown out.....

I'd much prefer spend my money on a better rod than uber expensive reel.....

I matched that reel up with one of the Johnny Morris Elite rods.....I think I'm going to really like that rod. And compared to my loomis rod I can't stop thinking how much more rod for the money the elite rods are compared to the Loomis

I just bought one of those prolite finesse reels for $69 and was actually talking about that reel today. Telling everyone how that reel performs as well as my $200 plus reels. Don't know what the longevity of this reel will be, but so far, I am impressed.

I wish there was a Bass Pro close to me! Closest is like 4 hours south. I hate buying stuff unless I can handle it first (even something similar).

I would, however, agree with the pawn shop route. I bought a Quantum Energy PT and a Tour PT on Friday. Paid $20 on the Energy, $35 on the Tour.

At the recommendation of the pretty lil sales gal, I bought that BPS Tourney reel last year as my first baitcaster. I could not be more disappointed. After my purchase, I read everything I could about adjusting it and practicing while watching TV etc...

Based on the reviews about the ProLite, I will have to consider an upgrade.

The prolite is EXCELLENT. But if you have any intention of making long casts with anything heavy note that you will probably empty the reel. It doesn't hold alot of line.
