Hawg Bass Assassin Posted November 30, 2007 Posted November 30, 2007 I fish in a creek here in s.w. Oklahoma; For {Trophy Bass } I, Have not been able to find a lure that will work on Trophy Bass in the creek for winter time. I have used...Plastic worm's up to 7"...Color's: Black,Motor oil & Electric Blue / Jig N' Pig's...Color's Blue on Black & Red on Black. Rattle Trap's never work in this creek anytime of the year!!! This creek's water color is stained & murky all year. Water temp: Will fall into the lower 40's...{ Winter time } This creek will give up Trophy Bass in Late Spring & Early Summer. My biggest Hawg Bass Yet, Went 14 pound's 2 ounce's out of this creek. Many Hawg Bass live in the creek all year round,With out going over the spillway. Any help to a new lure & A pattern to fish it. would greatly be appreciated. H.B.A. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted November 30, 2007 Super User Posted November 30, 2007 Welcome aboard! Your post might belong in "Central" section, but it might get more play here so this is where I put it. If you like, repost the same question in the other section of the Forum, too. My #1 suggestion would be focusing on a jig & pig presentation. ____________________________ After seeing your pics on the other thread, I would also suggest Mattlures Baby Bass. Quote
Super User T-rig Posted November 30, 2007 Super User Posted November 30, 2007 I agree with RW, jigs will catch big fish anywhere, anytime. Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted November 30, 2007 Super User Posted November 30, 2007 well howdy craig!!! glad you made it over here! anyway, i dont know the first thing about trophy bassin' but i know that most ppl use jigs... Quote
bighed Posted November 30, 2007 Posted November 30, 2007 HBA, i don't have any answers for your big fish problem. Just wanted to say hello! I grew up in SW OK and fished the ponds, creeks, and lakes around Lawton, Elgin, and Chickasha. It was a great place and time to be a kid with plenty of wide open spaces. big Quote
Super User RoLo Posted November 30, 2007 Super User Posted November 30, 2007 I also agree with Roadwarrior, it would be very tough to beat a jig & pig or swimbait during the cold water period. However, if you're willing to pull-out all the stops to land your winter trophy, I would suggest live minnows. Roger Quote
Terry_ Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 Welcome aboard! You gotta try the "flipping" jig! Quote

Evan Pease Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 It souds like you tried a lot already so maybe try something wierd. Chatter baits, weightless craw , creatures, etc. They work for me if the usual cranks, worms, and jigs wont do it. Quote
bighed Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 HBA, I never got to fish your creek but have looked it over good a couple times. I'd have been all over it if I knew it had those whoppers in it, lol. The pools between the dams looked real good last time I went by, lots of lilly pads. One of my buddies still lives out at MP Estates. I spent a lot of time in the refuge fishing with my dad when I was a kid. My favorite lake was Post Oak but heard some Job Corp kids opened the gate on the dam and drained it. Oh well, that was a long time ago. Good to hear from a home town guy! Quote
Hawg Bass Assassin Posted December 1, 2007 Author Posted December 1, 2007 bighead~ I'll have to keep ya in mind. If, I head out around here somewhere & need some home town advise. Thank's again. H.B.A. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted December 2, 2007 Super User Posted December 2, 2007 The biggest bass are going to be located in most ideal holding areas in winter to: 1) get the most food to come to them and 2) to expend as little energy as possible in accomplishing #1. Find the deepest holes near wingdams and or the dams themselves. You can try a casting a drop shot (I'm assuming you are fishing from shore and cannot verticle fish) or dead sticking a wacky rigged Senko. If the bottom isn't too snaggly, try a blade bait. Always cast up stream and fish your presentation back down; staying down stream of any target areas. That's what I'd do Quote
Super User Tin Posted December 2, 2007 Super User Posted December 2, 2007 HBA- Is this creek pressured? Is there much current? I know winter has different meanings in different parts of the country, so how cold does the water temperature get? Quote
Super User Catt Posted December 2, 2007 Super User Posted December 2, 2007 11lb 2oz Bass caught on 3 Mar 2007 on Lake Arbuckle; deep diving fire tiger crank bait in about 15' of water. Water temp was 47. Clear water Quote
Hawg Bass Assassin Posted December 3, 2007 Author Posted December 3, 2007 Crestliner2007~Thank's for help on the winter creek fishing. tin2win~Only in the summer time do's the creek get pressured. water temp is normally in the lower 40's.Thank's for your help. Catt~Awesome Hawg!!! H.B.A. Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted December 4, 2007 Super User Posted December 4, 2007 Whats up with the OU hat? My eyes were blinded. LOL What did you catch the 14 lber on? Sounds like you already have a good bait. Welcome to the forum, hard to beat that jig for slow winter presentations. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 4, 2007 Super User Posted December 4, 2007 roadwarrior~Thank's for the welcome and the advise. What color Jig n' Pig's would you suggest & how slow of a presantaion to the fish? As much as color, the particular trailer seems to be important right now. I fish the standard 1/2 oz black jig with a blue trailer, specifically the GYCB Kreature, Fat Baby Craw and Doublewide Beaver. For some reason green on green has been hot lately. I'm fishing a Micro Munch Tackle 1/2 oz "forrest green" with a GYCB Flappin' Hog (watermelon w/ black flakes). Now that the cold has arrived, I'll probably focus on an Uncle Josh pork trailer. Presentation: Slow and slower on the bottom. I am NOT dragging them, but lifting the bait to immitate a crawdad moving over a rock. Quote
radman Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 If the water is not real dirty try a suspending spoonbill rogue in a firetiger or something bright, and on your jig try the big 4 inch black/blue YUM crawpapi. I am also from down that way Lone Wolf. I live in tahlequah now. One more bait, try a chart/white spinnerbait,1/2ounce, but you need a #5 or 6 Indiana blade and if you can find one with a little red colorado on it in front of the indiana blade that is a big fish spinnerbait.. I have had most luck with the booyah. Quote
Hawg Bass Assassin Posted December 6, 2007 Author Posted December 6, 2007 Matt Fly... Thank's for the welcome. The hat said, Cotton Electric ! not OU..but OU is my team. lol I caught the 14 & 13 with in 2 hr of 1 another on a Hawg daddy...Black on Blue flake 3 1/2" plastic bait. roadwarrior~ Thank's for your help...Much Appreciated. radman~ thank's for the help...Bright color's in white or chartruse don't work in this creek..they scare the fish for some reason,I haven't found out yet. Thank's again. H.B.A. Quote
