Fishing Doug Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 Have any of you guys had your hands on the above reel yet? I went to the local BPS & Cabela's yesterday to take a look but neither had them in stock. I am curious to learn more about the "Zaion" material used for the body. Doesn't seem to be a lot of info out on this reel yet. Anybody have any experience with this reel? http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_103742____SearchResults Quote
Super User Micro Posted February 8, 2009 Super User Posted February 8, 2009 I messed around with them at the Richmond (VA) Fishing Expo. They feel light, and are super-smooth. The finish feels like a matte finish. Without trying it, it's hard to say how it would perform. But it felt and looked like a higher end reel. The Daiwa rep stated the Zaion is a kind of metal, but he stated the exact composition was "proprietary," which I'm sure is code for he didn't know. (I thought it was some sort of carbon fiber material, and I still do.) He stated it was as light at magnesium, and corrosion resistant. He stated it is a saltwater-safe reel. Daiwa's 2009 catalog suggests the same thing, since it is picture over a tropical flat (a tarpon or a bonefish in the background is all that's needed). Quote

I am with you-I think it has to be carbon fiber as opposed to metal. The weight of this reel is close to the Steez (7.8 vs. 7.1 for the 2500) for a little over half the price...may have to add one to the arsenal. FD Quote
ghost Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Zaion, is this the same material???: http://www.tackletour.com/reviewdaiwazillionrod.html Scroll down till you see the pic w/ the caption "reel seat unlike any other" & read what is says on top. This is the Daiwa Zillion b/c rod. I also thought that Zaion was some type of carbon composite after reading about the reel seat on the Zillion. Now, it is lighter & all but graphite framed reels I recall are made for lower end reels, right? Is this new Zaion a better thing than previous composite framed reels? The more I think about it, the Zaion used in the Fuego spinning reel & the Zillion reel seat has to be the same material. I'd rather then get lasts years Fuego, since it's an aluminum frame & a bit cheaper. Quote
The_Natural Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 It's bad to the bone. There is one that has apparently been used once or twice that I can buy for $250. I'm really trying not to give in. Quote
Skunked in DR Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Do it! You know you want to. Give in to the Monkey. And then post a review. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted February 9, 2009 Super User Posted February 9, 2009 It's the next reel on my list when I decide to buy another reel. Quote
