cwb60 Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Anybody ever check the avg. distance that they cast their bait casting reel? I just finished servicing mine and took them outside and tried them with a 1/4 oz. pratice plug, 12 lb test mono, and a 6'6" rod. Most of my reels went 30 to 35 yards. A couple had braid line and went a little farther. Is this about avg, or should I try to get them a little better. Also, How much difference is there between a super tuned reel, with ceramic bearings and a stock reel. Thanks cwb60 Quote
Calcutta Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Ive tested mine new one out of the box then took them apart and wiped out the grease and subsitited it with oil and I always gain 5 to 10 yards. Once you do this you have to oil them regularly.Ive also tested them on slower acting tip rods and If you can load the rod, the same reel gives way more distance. Quote
Super User Raul Posted February 7, 2009 Super User Posted February 7, 2009 There 's no such thing as "average casting distance", casting distance depends on a lot of variables like rod length, rod power and action, lure weight, lure profile, line diameter, type of reel, casting technique, wind direction and strength, air humidity and the list can go on. Catt can enlighten us even more, he 's been into casting distance competitions and knows how all those variables affect your casting distance. Quote
cwb60 Posted February 7, 2009 Author Posted February 7, 2009 Calcutta All my rods are MH. Never really thought about a softer tip casting farther, but can see what you mean. I do have a MH with a soft tip. I may try a reel off one of the stiffer tiped rods on it and see what the difference is. What about the long term with wiping the grease out and using oil only? How about gear noise? Thanks cwb60 Quote
Super User Micro Posted February 7, 2009 Super User Posted February 7, 2009 It's funny this thread came up. I went out to a local lake today for a few hours. I hardly ever care just how far a rig casts, as long as it will cast as far as I need it to and handle the technique I'm fishing. But when I fish off a dock, all the distance I can get is great. Especially if I'm fishing crankbaits or lipless. I took one of my Zillion 100HAs out today. I had it on a Fenwick HMG 7' medium with 12lb Trilene XL. I was throwing midsized deep diving cranks, glass shad raps and lipless. That friggin' combo is the bomb diggity. I thought my Revos cast far. I obviously couldn't pace the distance. But I was making nearly across the inlet where the dock was. And trust me, it was impressive. Quote
The_Natural Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 As said....it varies greatly. Traps are the easiest baits to cast...I don't think anyone will disagree that you can throw a trap into next week. I can spool reels with the 3/4oz LV-500 max. A Zoom/WEC Sweet Pea would represent the polar opposite (of baits I throw on a casting reel). I didn't say the small original Rapala floater because I throw them on a spinning rod as most do. Anyway....the difference in distance between the Sweet Pea and a trap is significant. I can safely say I can throw a trap twice as far as a super lightweight balsa crank. Quote
