Big Tom Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 I haven't used the new one but the last years model is actually a solid little reel. If you decide to get it, good luck and make sure you tell us what you think about it. Quote
Donkey punch Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 I was at bass pro shops, and as I suspected the blue rubber stuff was comming off the sharp edges of the reel. Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted February 4, 2009 Super User Posted February 4, 2009 Last year's model seems like a good reel but I'm not much for the matte finish or whatever it is Quote
budaman Posted February 4, 2009 Author Posted February 4, 2009 thx guys i was wondering what was up with the finish. :-? Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted February 4, 2009 Super User Posted February 4, 2009 I was at Bass Pro this past weekend and played with some of the newer reels I have not seen in person before, IMHO if you want a BPS brand reel, skip the Clunn and get the new Pro Qualifier. I was very impressed by just playing with it in the store. I thought it looked/felt like a steal for a $99 reel. Quote
ChiCityBasser Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 thx guys i was wondering what was up with the finish. :-? The matte finish is suppose to keep the reel from being slippery when it gets wet from what I read about it. Quote
UPS VT Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I have three of last years model and I love them. Our club just gave away one of the new models, I did not win it :'(. I don't like the look of the matte finish, but if it works like the old model who cares about the looks. Quote

Tpayneful Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 I have a couple of last years models and they are mechanically different from this years model. The new model has two brake systems, centrifigal brake pins under the side plate and an adjustable magnetic break on the side. This is the same type of brake system used in the Johnny Morris signature series for years. The Pro Qualifier has the same break system. The Johnny Morris reel is the best one that I have had. I hope they sell them for $129 during the spring sales event later this month. Quote

I had no idea they had the dual braking system....The Pflueger Patriarch has this system and it is virtually limitless as to the settings....completely customizable to your personal style. The Patriarchs centrifugal brake is great on it's own and can cast a mile without the magnetic brake at all Quote

This is coming from someone who owns 6 Patriarchs and 4 JM sig series reels. The Morris reels, nice as they are are big and rather heavy. It looks like they've gotten the Titanium deposition finish fixed as well as previous versions of the Johnny Morris reels would tarnish after a couple years of usage. Still a very good reel though. Super User Muddy Posted February 7, 2009 Super User Posted February 7, 2009 I would put more credence into Cart's review than the others. There is a huge difference between actually owning a reel, stripping it down yourself than holding one in a store. Thanks for another good review Cart Quote

I knew the JM had the dual braking system but had no idea that the others did this year. I have never used the JM but I just bought a second Patriarch and if they are anywhere near as good, seem to be pretty mush the same as the Patriarch, then 129 would be a great deal Quote
ghost Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 Didn't care for the new Clunn b/c reel, it's at bit heavy & cost a little more than the Pro Qualifier. Now that's a nice reel, I'll be getting both speeds during the Spring Classic. Quote
