Super User roadwarrior Posted February 6, 2009 Super User Posted February 6, 2009 Oops! Sorry... My partner is a guide and carries "spincasting" reels for folks that don't fish very much and kids. These are great reals that he has been using for several years: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=null-cat400026_TGP&id=0013026116646a&navCount=0&podId=0013026&parentId=cat400026&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=IJ&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat601233&cmCat=netcon&cm_ven=netcon&cm_cat=MSN&cm_pla=spincasting%20reels&cm_ite=netcon&rid=0180101070502&hasJS=true 8-) Quote

Super User J Francho Posted February 6, 2009 Super User Posted February 6, 2009 This is the reel you want: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0003036110294a&type=product&cmCat=SEARCH_all_NYR&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&Ntk=Products&sort=all&Go.y=0&_D%3AhasJS=+&Nty=1&hasJS=true&nyr=1&Ne=46&Ntt=daiwa+reels&N=48&_D%3Asort=+&_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&Go.x=0&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jsp.form1. The GC100 is probably the size you want. I have a couple of Zebco 33s that are over 15 years old and still run perfectly, but the Daiwa Goldcast is an extremely well built spincaster. Not a "snoopy" reel. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted February 6, 2009 Super User Posted February 6, 2009 I agree with JFrancho and do not forget to look at the ABU's also good products. Because of the placement of the cast button, it would be worth the time and effort to have him hold a few to make sure it is comfortable to cast with. Quote
Certified Public Angler Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 casting a spinning reel is not hard... However casting a push button is a pain in the ***. Quote

At 13, baitcast reels are a very viable option. If ever you needed an "excuse" to buy new gear... ;D If not, another vote for the Zebco 33. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 6, 2009 Super User Posted February 6, 2009 I agree, though its really up to the individual kid. My son simply picked up (ok, stole) one of my baitcasting rigs, and was able to use it, and use it well at just 8 years old. I had my mom pitching a jig into a coffee can 40 feet away last summer. You'd think my dad could wrap his head around a baitcaster? No way. He says he hated them when he was a kid, and that they were why spinning reels were invented, LOL. I'd at least let a kid try a BC before investing, though. Quote
UPS VT Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 My oldest son is 11 and I have all I can do to get him to try anything other that his spincast. He does not like spinning gear. I did get him to try one of my baitcasters last summer. I am hoping to get him to try different equipment this year. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 6, 2009 Super User Posted February 6, 2009 I'd say just let him fish with what he wants. Keep pressuring him to use this or that, and he'll resent the time with you. Quote
UPS VT Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I try not to force it on him. I just suggest that he try this rod, or that rod. I would just like to see him try different types of reels. Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted February 7, 2009 Super User Posted February 7, 2009 you can't go wrong with a Zebco 33 or 202 Quote
