Btech Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Im sure this is a touchy subject and one that is posted often as I have read through just about all things pertaining to "Line". However, Im gona ask it... What LINE would you recomend for a Shimano Symetree FJ 2500 on a Medium Pole? I fish all kinds of bait on it right now from swimbaits spinners soft plastics and jigs as it is the only pole i have right now. (About to buy a Cuedo E before the roadtrip ) I have used wallmart line - Stren Berkley and the low cheep line and am SICK of it - Read my post on Line problems in the Shimano Product Suport - IT tangles and breaks and even loosens some knots (I know quite a bit that do hold so this isnt the only problem) . Id like to move up in the world so if you all have somthing you would recomend please let me know. Also if BPS doesn't carry it you might need to help me out with where to get it as BPS is my main store. (I asked their guys and they sold me Berkley Triline Sensation which SUCKS) Thanks and hope this helps others as well. Quote
Bass Dude Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 P-Line, TripleFish, HI-Seas, Suffix are some of my favorites. The P-Line and Suffix you can find at BPS. TripleFish and HI-Seas I usally buy off the internet at various sites. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted January 28, 2009 Super User Posted January 28, 2009 I use Yo-zuri hybrid and Berkley big game. Quote
Handy Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 For years I have used berkely and can say without a dought that I must be loony because I kept buying line that didn't perform. I did make a switch to braids and have been happy with most of them but still have yet to find a excellent mono. I am considering suffix seige for my meduim spinning rod in about 10lb test. But I may have to wait for 2 more months before I get open water to find out if I like it. I am glad you asked this question as I too was going to ask. I am sure someone more experienced than me with dealing with mono will speak up and lead us in a better direction. Paul Quote
tyrius. Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Trilene XT 8lb is what I use on my 2500 symetre for soft plastics, small jigs, and spinnerbaits. I like it. I also have sufix braid on the spare spool. The knot problems will probably be fixed with practice in tieing them and not in a change of line. The tangles may be due to how you're spooling your line and/or the types of lures that you're using (inline spinners cause big time line twist). Quote
daviscw Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 P-Line CXX or Trilene 100% Flourocarbon. Quote
Btech Posted January 28, 2009 Author Posted January 28, 2009 There realy is a differance - Im gona check out P line this weekend at BPS - How do you all pick which line # to use? I think 8 would be fine for my local ponds and wiley .... but is there a formula or method Quote
T-Bone Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 P-Line CXX is a real good all purpose line imo. Quote
KevO Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 I use 6-8# yo-zuri hybrid for spinning reels and 10-15# for casting reels. Also, if you read the box or look at the spool on some spinning reels they will have the line recommendations printed on the spool. That will tell you what the manufacturer recommends. Quote

I'd only think about going higher if you are flipping heavy cover, or decide you want braid for topwater. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 28, 2009 Super User Posted January 28, 2009 Geez... This topic seems to pop up every other day... My answer hasn't changed very much: Spinning gear: Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft #6 (.010" diameter, 11.9 lb test) Baitcasting gear: Ultra Soft or original Hybrid #12 (.013" diameter, 19.5 lb test) BTW, Hybrid is currently on sale at BPS: http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SearchResults?searchOption=products&hvarSearchString=yo-zuri+hybrid&storeId=10151&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&CMID=TOP_SEARCH_GO&x=13&y=20 8-) Quote
Super User burleytog Posted January 29, 2009 Super User Posted January 29, 2009 PLine CX 8 lb. test Quote
The_Natural Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 PLine CX 8 lb. test +1....but you could do the 6lb and it would be as strong as most soft 8lb lines people spool on their spinning reels. I have 8lb CXX on a Loomis 723c IMX spinning rod and I'm not scared to throw 3/8oz jigs with it. Bring it! Quote
Super User burleytog Posted January 29, 2009 Super User Posted January 29, 2009 The 6 will work no doubt. I would feel comfortable fishing for sharks with 6 lb. CXX. Quote
NBR Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Btech, Stren and Berkley are both good lines. With all due respect if you are having trouble the problem is either you, your rod or your reel. Most likely you. By there nature spinng reels twist line so you must put it on twist free. It actually twists one direction on the cast and untwists on the retreive. Net effect nothing. I don't use the clockwise counter clockwise method. Put the line through a few or all the guides. Fasten to the reel. Be sure your drag is very tight. Put the spool of line on the floor with the label up. Crank on a bit. Put some slack in the line to check for twist. If no twist continue to fill. If the line twists flip the line spool over and then fill. If you crank against the drag you line will twist terribly. Also a bait that spins can/will cause twist. If I use a straigh line spinner I have a swivel on either the lure or the line. I watch soft plastics carefully to be sure they are not spinning be cause of poorly rigging them up. Be sure they are rigged straight. If you want them to twist for a reason use a swivel. I am retired and fish several days a week and I can't remember the last time I had line twist. I admit that I back reel instead of relying on the drag so slipping drag is not an issue with me. Quote
Btech Posted January 29, 2009 Author Posted January 29, 2009 Sorry NBR but the twist your talking about is not related to the example im talking about - Read the Shimano Product Support ... They too said that the line im using is the main issue. I didnt say Berkley or Stren SUCKS i said the kind i have Sucks - Wallmart brands just dont seem to work on this reel but work fine on my shakesphere . Its between the Spool and bail that the Twist / tangle happens. in cast - Yes your right it is probably the way its being put on but since spooling with Pline i havnt had the problem (casting in my front yard havnt hit the water yet) although i spooled it the same way as the berkley . Thanks for your support though. - Will try swivles when i use inline spinner. Quote
LVT Bassin Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Spinning: Izorline XXX Super Co-poly #6 Casting: Izorline Platinum #12 I'm trying to find out the specific diameters and lb test for those 2 lines. I'm also very curious to try the Yo-Zuri lines that roadwarrior keeps recommending. Quote
fishintroop Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 I'm surprised to hear your problems with the Sensation. I switched to that line 2 yrs ago and absolutely love it on my spinning and crankin gear. I attended a seminar nearly 20 yrs ago by a locally respected pro/expert. He recommended 6-8lb for spinning gear, 12-15 for spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and 17lb for wormin' and jiggin' here in Jersey. I have kind of followed that advise and it hasn't been wrong here in Jersey. I do use braid for worms and jigs when I am pitchin' and flippin' though. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted January 30, 2009 Super User Posted January 30, 2009 I did catch a shark on P-line 20# flurocoated, apx 6' 150# lemon on a king rig this past summer. I caught a second one on a spinner with 30# braid, the only advantage was line capacity. Quote
cbreeze22 Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 Have two Symetres on ML 7'Avid rod and 6'8" Powell. Always used 6# or 8# Berkley XL mono. Just switched over recently and have one spooled with 20# Power Pro braid with 8# Seaguar inviz fluro leader. Sweet really sensitive on my Powell. Have the other one spooled right now with PLine fluro clear for drop shot. 8-) Quote
Btech Posted February 1, 2009 Author Posted February 1, 2009 Well I havn't had time to go to BPS and pick up some more line - Said I would update this weekend but I lied . Will Try tomorrow to get out but have to go look at a few boats to buy with tax money . Quote
Btech Posted February 2, 2009 Author Posted February 2, 2009 AWSOME AWSOME AWSOME LINE! ... PLine ... Tryed it today and LOVE IT - Still want to try out RW's rec on the YoZuri but im attached to my Pline... literaly .... no really i got a hook in my hand! Ok this stuff is great - havn't had a single problem with line twist or knots coming undone. And i have spooled it the same way I did the Berkley so Im pretty confidant im spooling right. I got the Pline CXX in green 8lb on now and am going to BPS to buy some 6, 12, and maybe 4lb for my Crappie pole. Anyone used YoZuri and Pline CXX ? Which did you like better? Quote
