BBeavers Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Hey im trying to decide between these two rods for a jigging rod. was wondering if anyone had and suggestions or advantages and disadvantages. Thanks Quote
Captain Chaos II Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Godzilla vs. Hedorah - Sorry, couldn't resist. I've heard good reviews on both rods. If you have a store with both nearby, put a reel on them and see how they feel. They really should be comparable and doesn't sound like you can go wrong with either one. If you have Shimano or Daiwa reel you are gonna put on it, maybe go with the same brand. Quote
Super User David P Posted January 28, 2009 Super User Posted January 28, 2009 Zillion, hands down. I don't like the reel seat on the Cumara at all. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted January 28, 2009 Super User Posted January 28, 2009 does the Zillion have a lifetime warrenty?? if not id get the cumara Quote
Super User Dan: Posted January 28, 2009 Super User Posted January 28, 2009 This is based solely on handling the rods in stores, not from actual fishing experience. Other people may confirm or dispute it. I like the finish on the Zillions. They are at least partially matte black. The Cumara has a clear gloss finish that I believe makes it a bit heavier and insulates vibration. The Zillion feels a bit lighter and crisper in hand and I would assume that would translate into better sensitivity. I like the reel seat on the Cumaras though. I'm sure you would be happy with either one, especially for a jig rod. Quote
Big O Tires Angler Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 I would go for the Cumara...I just like it more and it's easier to warranty because most stores carry quite a selection of them. Quote
Donkey punch Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Cumara because of warranty. you can brake your Cumara 5 times and get a new one? You brake a Zillion you done.. Quote
Super User David P Posted January 29, 2009 Super User Posted January 29, 2009 Guys where are you getting your information from? The Zillions have a life time warranty as well... Quote
Donkey punch Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 I guess I am referring to the fact that Shimano dealers are supposed to swap them in store. Supposed to is the magic word. Quote
The_Natural Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Cumara because of warranty. you can brake your Cumara 5 times and get a new one? You brake a Zillion you done.. Daiwa will replace your Zillion, you just have to pay for shipping. As far as the rods go...they are both very sensitive rods, and are both at the same price point. I think both are light weight as well. The Zillion just has further refinement when compared to the Cumara. Shimano could have at least thrown some aluminum winding checks on a rod that costs $220...not to mention some decorative wraps. The Zillion has as many or more wraps as a lot of customs I've seen; it's commendable they didn't take a lot of shortcuts. The Zillion has five separate wraps before you even reach the first guide! Two wraps right above chrome-trimmed locking nut. Two more wraps right after the rod identification writing... and of course the wrapping on the first guide... I don't have a close pic of the split grip with the aluminum winding checks, but it looks nice and makes a difference. *edit* Found one on TT... Even my Quantum PT Superlites have nice aluminum checks with wraps above each. Get the most for your money! Quote
Super User David P Posted January 29, 2009 Super User Posted January 29, 2009 If anyone wants a Zillion rod after reading this, I'm selling one ;D Check the flea market! I know you want another one Natural! ;D Quote
s13john Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 what about carrot stix's. i have one and love it i've used a cumara and handled a zillion and although i wouldn't mind owning either, i think the carrot owns up .... and had a good warranty too. Quote

However; I don't like the guides at all, and I don't think the Carrot blank has the level of sensitivity of the Cumara or Zillion. Just my opinion of course (I owned two carrots for a few months). Unlike some; I actually like the looks of the Carrot sticks. That said...the Carrot stick is a $150 rod, and we are comparing it to $220 rods. The Carrot can hold it's own against any $150 out there; it excels in some areas against the Crucial/Cara/Avid. Quote
Bantam1 Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 The reason we do not have any of the fancy aluminum pieces on the Cumara rods was to reduce the weight. We set out to make the lightest and most sensitive bass rod in our line up. This meant deleting extra "bling" from the rod to drop the weight. Its like a race car. You do not need fancy wheels or A/C on a race car. We do not need extra metal on our lightweight rods. Quote

They add no negligible weight, which is why a lot of custom rod builders use them. I know you will defend your brand and company, but the Cumara just looks unfinished in the handle area. The minimalist 'racecar' theory would work if Shimano wouldn't have done aluminum trim with a metal plate on the butt section. If you are going to dress up half the handle...just add the .01 grams of weight and do the other half. This pic shows the handle looking unfinished. You could shave off more weight than the aluminum checks would add by properly shaping the EVA as well. The Cumara and Zillion are BOTH great rods. When two competing rods are both light and sensitive....you have to start splitting hairs. That's all I'm doing.... Quote
LAO162 Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 I think my choice would be based upon where I can get a few dollars shaved of the price ;D ;D Either would fit on my wish list. I just wish I could find them locally. Quote
Bantam1 Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Natural- I was not trying to defend the product, I just wanted to explain why we did not use the metal winding checks on the rods. I was approached by the rod development manager at the time and he said that he wanted to build the lightest bass rod we have ever offered. My input to him was the actions, the SiC guides and the reel seat design on the casting rods. He did everything else. We discussed the fancy appearance items, but they did add 1-2 grams here and there. When you want to make the lightest rod you have to give up some things to hit your goals. With rods and weight, hairs are about what you can shave to reduce weight further. For example the lightest rod in the Cumara series is 3.28 ounces and the heaviest is 4.69 ounces. There isn't much out there that is lighter than that for similar actions and lengths. Quote
