northernboyMN Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 O.K I Know I am going to get a mixture of answers but I dont care. My birthday is coming up and I am in need of a new rod so what is your opinion on what is the best rod at under 50$?? Any answere will be muchly appreciated Thanks, NorthernBoyMN Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted January 29, 2009 Super User Posted January 29, 2009 First off, welcome aboard. Second - you gotta be more specific - casting, spinning, what size baits you throwing, etc. Third - this post will likely get moved to the "Rods Reels and Lines" section. Fourth - your choices will be limited at 50 bucks, but you are not completely screwed. Check out the Flea Market section here on the site first. Good deals pop up all of the time. Quote

Bassnajr Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 The $50.00 limit is tough, but a Bass Pro Shop Bionic Blade is a good bet...check the links below: http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_98372____SearchResults http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_98371____SearchResults Good luck!! Super User skunked_again Posted January 29, 2009 Super User Posted January 29, 2009 it would be nice to know if youre buying over the net, or if theres a store youre looking in. for $50 you can get an ok working mans rod. Quote
njbasser Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 I would suggest a Shimano Convergence. I have two and they are nice for the money, and they have a Lifetime Warranty. I will say it before someone else does- DO NOT GET AN UGLY STICK Quote
Super User flechero Posted January 29, 2009 Super User Posted January 29, 2009 For $50 or less, I'd be looking at All Star rods. Quote
SoCalRob Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 or $20 more for the Clarus rods with lifetime warranty! Quote
OIFBasser Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 I won't say an ugly stik, But I will say an UGLY STIK Lite. I know not everybody can drop a bill-fifty for a quality rod. I keep one in my truck for emrgency fishing and have had no problem with it Also you can get an ALL-STAR select at Dicks for 50-60 bucks, which is owned by shakespeare or the same company. The Shimano Voltaeus is pretty new. It is built to compete with the UGLY STIK, but it is a Shimano so it has a leg up in my book, and the waranty is supposed be better too. They range form 30-60 bucks, and have multiple models for just about every technique. Ditto on the Bionic Blade St. Croix Triumphs run about $60 at most Dicks I've been in, and coupons for there are always floating around so it could get you into the $50 range. Hope this helps. Quote
Certified Public Angler Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Shimano Clarus ive seen them for 35-40$ Or the BPS crankin stick if you need a treble rod 40$ Quote
Super User cart7t Posted January 29, 2009 Super User Posted January 29, 2009 Simmons sporting goods, on ebay, was closing out their All Star Classics at $40 each but I see they're just about out of them. Occasionally the BPS Bionic blades go for that price on sale. Quote
Super User flechero Posted January 29, 2009 Super User Posted January 29, 2009 Academy regularly carries All Star and keeps a good selection of the sub $50 rods. Quote
NBR Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Because shipping costs for rods is so high I'd go to a BPS store or a Dick's Sporting Goods or similar but unless there was no other choice not to a Wal-Mart type. I'd pick some thing in graphite with a medum action and quick taper in the 6'6" or 7' range. My absolute minimum would be 6" and then only is accuracy is much more iportant than distance. Quote
farmpond1 Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 USUALLY when somebody prefaces a question with "I need your opinion" I respond with "You're ugly and your momma dresses you funny!" But I'll refrain this time. Your question is waay too open-ended. What will you be fishing for? I noticed that you are probably from Minnesota (MN). Will you fish for muskie and pike or bass or walleye, or perch? The demands are (or can be) quite different for each species and, of course, the kind of reel you plan to mate with it. Some rods will do a passable job for several species but it just depends. Insufficient data does not compute. Quote
MONSTERhudd Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 I know that the Shimano Clarus rods are decent. Also, some of the Daiwa rods they make that they carry at your local sporting good stores are decent. But, you aren't gonna find a great rod for 50. Alot of good rods in the 100-200 range tohugh . I'd get the Clarus though. Shimano has great customer service. Quote
rfrazier Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 How bout the Daiwa Procyon? Good looking rod for $45-50. Definitely one of the only split grips youll find at that price. http://www.daiwa.com/Rod/detail.aspx?ID=248 Quote
Cravin Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Here are a few Id try for that price plus that Diawa mentioned by Rayre. http://www.cabelas.com/prod-1/0063916123932a.shtml http://www.fishermanswarehouse.com/shop/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=4596 Also The Pro Qualifier LTD at Bass Pro Shop is a nice IM8 rod for $40 if you can go there, I don't think they sell them online. drmnbig Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 I'm the resident cheapskate here so I'll give my opinion on this one. I say look at he Berkely Lightning series of rods. I love these rods and have yet to break one. You can easily get one of these in the 30-40 range. Quote
