The_Natural Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 Shimano needs to have a swept handle & star drag to keep it up to date. As Soon as Quantum and BPS copied Daiwa's swept handle, I wondered why daiwa didn't patent it (Obviously they couldn't for one reason or another). Shimano and Daiwa have always had their own styles...they are both big companies that have large R&D departments. The swept handle is an improvement, but I don't think Shimano will utilize the technology just out of principle . I'm being serious.... Quote

There is no doubt most anglers on message boards prefer Shimano or Daiwa reels, but those brands account for most of the U.S. reel sales so it makes sense. I own and love 5 Quantum PT Superlite rods, and Quantum isn't nearly as highly regarded as it was in the '80s and early '90s. I'm OK with that. I have my favorites, but I realize some young and new anglers are influenced by message boards and if your brand isn't a 'favorite' it can be insulting. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted January 27, 2009 Super User Posted January 27, 2009 There is no cause here, I am bustin you know whose chops thats all. We are making a concentrated effort to keep threads on topic. I admit, I have been an offender on occasion, but going forward, we will try to keep "other brands" out of the mix. However, when the typical "which brand" thread is posted, GAME ON! BTW, I'm still fishing the STX on my jig rod. Surprised? 8-) Quote

MitchIsFishin Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 Just like the gearheads for photo gear (duh, Canon/Nikon/Leica/Hasselblad), or even worse, guitarists. Try debating Santa Cruz, Collings, Lowden, etc. Fishing seems to be no different. : Quote

Bassaholic84 Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 Looks is always a priority, just not a major one like how well the reel is built. With shimano you know your getting a quality product. Thats why looks are more of a priority. Quote

I don't care too much for bling-bling, but that's just me. Otherwise, I care a lot about aesthetics...a lot. My preference is for rod & reel combinations to look like a gun and perfect in every way. I'm particularly fond of black and silver. My line color matches, too! Dress, purse and shoes...just like my girls. 8-) Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted January 28, 2009 Super User Posted January 28, 2009 Me too, I even clean my cork rod handles on a regular basis with denatured alcohol. Quote
MitchIsFishin Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Snook, if you'll apply some U40 cork sealer or Birchwood & Casey gunstock oil to the cork you can just wipe them off with a damp rag. Protects the cork too. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted January 28, 2009 Super User Posted January 28, 2009 I ain't feeling the Metro Sexual Fisherman deal! whats next: matching tackle bags, with terry cloth fishing robes with matching fluffy Slippers? Get a reel that you like, slap it on a rod you like and go fishing, how hard is that? : I understand guys have rooms full of tackle and are officiandos some guys are Antique Collectors,i have no opinions here But the SPORT is called FISHING , used to be a way for a man to throw all worries to the wind and relax! 8-) Quote

Just heat up some Ragu in the microwave and boil some noodles. What's the big deal, it's Italian! Quote
Super User Muddy Posted January 28, 2009 Super User Posted January 28, 2009 Ragu is not Italian: no Italian would use Corn Syrup,Sugar,Xanthan and what ever else in that crap. Fishing , as I was taught was kind of a guys day out not a teenage girls night out When you get more into how stuff looks, or makes you look more than the functionality of it all you loose me , way behind. Super User Dan: Posted January 28, 2009 Super User Posted January 28, 2009 Wouldn't you consider the way a house looks before you buy it? What about a car? I would certainly think that if you are spending money on something you would make sure it is something that you like to look at. Quote

I agree with you on that. But now people are talking about choosing line that makes their reel stand out. I could care less about looks. Take G-Loomis for example. They matched their rod colors to a turd!! I guess it's just like baits. Some are just made to catch the eye of the angler!!! Quote

bmadd Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Take G-Loomis for example. They matched their rod colors to a turd!! What's that suppose to mean? I think what he's trying to say is that most of the G. Loomis lineup doesn't really look all that great. They don't try to impress anybody with looks. They are very old school when it comes to aesthetics. But they're rods fish amazingly and that is what matters to their company. Quote
