I'm looking for two bait-casting reels in the $50-$70 price range for the two new rods I got for my birthday. I ordered some Daiwa pro-casters from BPS, they were not what I wanted so I sent them back.  I'm looking for reels that have at least a 6;2;1 but nothing over 6;3;1I want a reel  that will be able to handle crankbaits ,C-rigs, T-rigs, and Cast and reel very smoothly. I've been  looking at reels at Cabelas and BPS, But most of the reels in my price range seem to be a hit-and-miss thing, sometimes you get something good, other times you get junk. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

good luck and tight lines

Shimano Crestfire and Coriolis are great reels in that price range.  Up until I started upgrading to curados and chronarchs, these reels were my main weapons.  The have good line capacity, 6.2:1 gear ratio, and fit nicely in my hand.  Cast far, and very durable.

I wouldn't buy a reel for under 70$

They're mostly junk

The Revo S is a good reel for its price (110$)

Don't be cheap when buying rods and reels

Another vote for the Fritts reel. I got one at Christmas and after a few outings I enjoy throwing cranks with it. My $2 worth.

1 good reel > 2 cheap reels

As someone who tried to go that route, trust me when I say that buying cheap reels is a great way to get really ticked off.

I heartily disagree.  I fish with so-called 'cheap' reals and they work perfectly fine.  Sure they may wear you're a pro and fish on an daily basis but for the weekend angler they are perfect.  Now, if you are blessed and have the money the more expensive reels are terrific, but by no means will buying a 'cheap' reel make your fishing experience horrible!

I highly recommend the Abu Garcia Silver Max - I have one of these and have been extremely pleased.  I also own two BPS Extremes and they are nice, however I think the Silver Max has them beat.  I find the drag system on the Silver Max is superior to the BPS extreme, and IMHO the Silver Max casts easier and further.

Thanks for the info guys, but I'm not an ebay guy,  I'm a shore fisherman so I like to have two poles rigged..... saves time and line. I guess the real question is do I go with one high end reel, or still try my luck at two for the same price. Two BPS extremes would cost me (tax not included) $129.99. One Shimano Citica E will cost me $119.99. What should I do? Take a chance and get the extremes, or go with the dependable Citica.

i have a friend who swears by the bps extremes.

I guess you think it is perfectly acceptable to buy a new reel every year?

You get what you pay for, and with casting reels, the line of demarcation is around $100.

I have bought $70 reels that were immediate pieces of crap and a $29 daiwa strikeforce that can compete (at least initially) with my best stuff.  It was much more important for me initially to get those 2 rigs going and then build up to better stuff later. If you've only got 1 going, you will save yourself a lot of aggravation by being able to switch between your jig and your spinnerbait or whatever else quickly. Go with the 2, Especially if those BPS extremes are as decent as everyone claims.

the single most important thing to look for in a reel in this price range is a one-piece aluminum frame. a solid, rigid frame is the foundation for the entire reel and keeps all the internal aligned for smooth, bind-free operation. it is something you can't easily see (as opposed to the bling they put on reels now) but companies that spend the money there tell me that they're serious about making a durable, dependable and smooth reel.

now, at the $70 price point, most reels have graphite or composite frames, but there are some with one-piece aluminum frames. graphite/composite framed reels can feel good initially but, under load or after an hour or so of fishing, they can flex and still start making noises or grinding and, over the long haul, won't hold up.

the most inexpensive daiwa with a one-piece aluminum frame is the exceler. the BPS extremes and prolite finesse reels have them too. i have not used the extremes but i have two of the prolite finesse reels and they're surprising good.

I guess I am the odd ball of the bunch, but I had an extreme and HATED it's braking system. But I would agree with most it is hit or miss. I have 2 BPS cheap 39.99 tour. special reels and LOVE them. But everyone you talk to LOVES their extreme, but it just wasn't the reel for me.

RIDICULOUS answer!

How many have you owned, lets hear your experience with these Junk reels?

The BPS EXTREMES: I would jump on one now, as the updated the reel for 2009 and the old ones will be put on a huge discount.

Cabela Prodigiues and Tourny xz's: I have ownded and used both, no isssues both for around 65 on sale

USED: Look on our flea market I curently own 4 Pflueger Trion Baitcaster I got on our flea market used for 45 bucks. I spent a6 on each getting them cleamed and lubed ( Pflueger does em) and they run like new, which would have cost 99 per

Also look for ABU's , Micro has a 5600c Mag 4 up right now for onoly 50 bucks ( new they go for 99) and I bet the reel is in new condition.

The notion you can't find a good reel at this price is BS I have been doing it for years.

Gotta disagree here. I have a BPS Extreme the old one, with the 6 pin brake for over 2 years of very active use. It was given to me by my fried Gene who had it for 5 years of also heavy use.

Many of my friends and I have had Pflueger Trions , they last for years,   And I bet you there are guys fishing ABU's and Pfluegers over 25 years old all over this board, that were bought in this price range: I have fished with some of them myself.

This is from personal first hand experieince , not She-mano driven propaganda. ::(
