PAfisherman Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 I've heard that graphite becomes brittle and weakens in low temperatures. I was wondering if there is any truth to this and whether I should be concerned about using high modules rods in temps around 20 to 30 degrees fahrenheit. Quote
hercdoc Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 If thats the case I guess people who ice fish have to use bamboo or fiberglass rods... Quote
vicdotcom Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 My garage got colder than 20-30 degrees in nyc lol I wouldnt be concerned at that temperature. Now if it was -20 -30 degrees in the tundra, then I would be worried. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 15, 2009 Super User Posted January 15, 2009 I fish for steelhead through the winter, and the only rod I broke was when the leader snapped, and the rod tip hit a branch on the rebound. I wouldn't be too concerned with temps in the 20-30s. I fish in colder all the time. Quote
BassBandit35 Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 Have seen clear coated under the guides where the wrap is- cracked or chipped. Not sure if it was affected from the cold weather. Quote
Super User flechero Posted January 15, 2009 Super User Posted January 15, 2009 No worries, graphite will withstand much lower temps than you will. Quote
Lucky Craft Man Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 What I've heard (this could be wrong) is that the contraction rate of graphite is different then that of the epoxy holding the guides in place. Therefore, delamination or some cracking can occur in the epoxy. That's the only damage I heard that could occur due to the extreme cold. Quote
PAfisherman Posted January 15, 2009 Author Posted January 15, 2009 Thanks for all the reply's. Sounds like I have nothing to worry about. Today was about 21 degrees. No fish and my buddies musky box was stollen right out of his truck. Almost 1500.00 worth of lures and takle. Not one of our better days > Quote
