brandonmccray Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 Hey all. I'm having a problem with my reel and any help you all could offer would be greatly appreciated. My reel began to bind up on the retrieve. The handle would get to a place where it wouldn't want to budge. I also noticed that the levelwind stays to one side instead of moving across. From that, the line reeled in accumulates to that side of the spool. Any ideas as to what might be causing this? The reel is a Chronarch 101B. Quote
Super User Micro Posted January 4, 2009 Super User Posted January 4, 2009 Sounds like a damaged/dirty pawl or level wind worm gear. Have you checked it to make sure it's clean? Quote
Super User cart7t Posted January 4, 2009 Super User Posted January 4, 2009 Sounds like you broke some teeth off the plastic level wind gear and they're stuck in the main gear teeth. Pull the crank side plate off to verify. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted January 4, 2009 Super User Posted January 4, 2009 weeds can get in the levelwind and cause it to jam.if you force it it strips and you have damage requiring gear replacement. Quote
Super User .RM. Posted January 4, 2009 Super User Posted January 4, 2009 You don't say what reel it is..... I'm having a problem with my reel and any help you all could offer would be greatly appreciated. My reel began to bind up on the retrieve. The handle would get to a place where it wouldn't want to budge. And you cranked it past the first bind, now it doe's it all the time.Could be any of the issues stated above. But i'll bet the worm gear and pawl in the level wind is gummed up and cause the bind in the first place you cranked it past that and blew out a couple of the teeth on the idler gear (the white nylon gear) that runs the worm gear and the reel is binding in the same spot every crank. The fix will be to send/take it to your local service shop (depending on reel mfg) and have it properly cleaned and re-lubed and the blown out part replaced.. Just my .02¢ from my bench.... Good Luck & Tight Lines!!! Quote
brandonmccray Posted January 5, 2009 Author Posted January 5, 2009 Thanks for the info. It's getting pretty cold out, so at least I won't be missing much during the time it's being repaired. Quote
