Steven Ladner Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 Hey, I have been watching the Bass Pros Season 2 and was wondering what kind of reel is KVD fishing with in just about all of his scenes? I know I have seen it before, but just don't remember. Was thinking about looking in to getting one if he is constantly using it, must be a good reel. Thanks.
Jake. Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 He fishes Quantums. They don't exactly have the best reputation for duribility or performance. But if I were payed to use a certain brand of reel, I probably would use them also.
Steven Ladner Posted December 31, 2008 Author Posted December 31, 2008 Just curious, it's a blue/silver reel that he uses a lot.
Super User flechero Posted December 31, 2008 Super User Posted December 31, 2008 He uses regular, off the shelf reels from BPS, just like you and I buy.
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 31, 2008 Super User Posted December 31, 2008 "it must be a good reel" Not necessarily. He gets his reels for free and are replaced as needed. The reel is a Quantum Energy E40 PT.
Steven Ladner Posted December 31, 2008 Author Posted December 31, 2008 Thanks roadwarrior. That's the one.
Super User flechero Posted December 31, 2008 Super User Posted December 31, 2008 I was being very sarcastic!
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 31, 2008 Super User Posted December 31, 2008 Kinda like the Chevy, Ford, Dodge and Toyotas that NASCAR races!
BassBandit35 Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 Energy E750PT to E770PT and Tour Edition TE1170PT "Burner" Those are the reels he used whole season '07-'08
Bantam1 Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 Kinda like the Chevy, Ford, Dodge and Toyotas that NASCAR races! You mean those are not really cars that I can buy at the dealer? ;D Thats OK I guess. Those cars can only turn left and I need to turn right from time to time.
The Next KVD Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 He sure isn't using his "Signature reel" Get a shimano instead. lol. No one I know likes Quantums because there not durable. I thought I had read somewhere also, that KVD wears out atleast one bearing each tournament in his reels.

Not durable? : History speaks itself so does durability, BASS record by Dean Rojas with 108 lbs then Paul Elias with 132 lbs. Both with Quantum. Your last statment, calling ya a bluff. Jimmy Houston bowl hair wearing KVD shirt standing on the bank casting with Shimano on Quantum rod beside the boat launch. A mentally confused individual. ;D

ChiCityBasser Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 My Quantums have been pretty durable but they are all spinning setups. I have an older model Incyte and a Catayst. KVD also used the Energy PT 30 spinning reel as well
BassBandit35 Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 Has nothing do with a brand. Some anglers' neglecting it instead of keeping it well maintenance. In doing so, it will stay durable. Before a new reel hit the market, lets have Shimano unpainted reel paint in Quantum color and slap it with a Quantum model decal. Nobody will know its Shimano reel underneath it and still get badmouth because of the label on the outside. I'll take all of my Reebok shirts stitches off and sew em in "Nike" : I like all brands, heaven sake it just a name.
Stingray23 Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 A lot of you guys do nothing but talk crap about Quantum but in the almost 20 yrs I've been fishing them I've yet to have a problem with them. Too many Shimano nutswingers :
shimanogloomis man Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 I fished with a pro i dont want to tell u who but down in florida that used to 5 years ago on the flw and bass masters circuit and said for a fact that he knows kvd personally and he burns threw quantum reels every 6 months or so... thats why he only fishes shimano reels
Super User bilgerat Posted December 31, 2008 Super User Posted December 31, 2008 Too many Shimano nutswingers Uh oh, now you went and did it Hit the dirt!!......... INCOMING!!
Ern Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 Only Reels I ever had trouble with were Quantums. Good news is they stand behind their product....Bad news the replacements had to go back too. Ern
Dogface Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 He sure isn't using his "Signature reel" . No one I know likes Quantums because there not durable. One day I read an on-line statement from a guy who badmouthed a product I owned. I asked him to describe the problems he was having so I would be prepared if I experienced the same problems. It turns out he never owned the item and never used it but heard it was bad from an another person he did not personaly know. Now everytime I see statements like this I wonder how many guys who badmouth a product have actually owned one. I don't think Quantum or any reel company could stay in business selling two and three hundred reels that fall apart.
U.W BronzeBack Hunter Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Anybody on this forum a mechanical engineer? until i hear straight from one that Quantum reels are flawed, i will stay brand loyal to Quantum. long live Zebco!!!!! ;D (but yea, i have a shimano spinning reel, and it seems pretty well built. But i would take my Quantum Energy PT over it anyday)

Those that have never own nor try Quantum just jump on bandwagon thinking they're bad to not feel left out of Shimano crowd. I use Quantum for 15+ years with no complaint except my error. I have 2 Shimano, 9 Quantum, 4 Abu (catfish). Not saying a bad thing about other brands because all are in working order.

I have fished w/ a friends brand new out of the box Quantum Energy PT and in the first hour the levelwind broke. He ended up replacing it through the warranty and within a year he had to have it replaced again. He no longer fishes with Quantum and I take that as a sign that maybe I shouldn't use Quantum anymore. They just break in my hands for some odd reason. If they work for you with no problems all the power to you, I'm just not a fan of Quantum.
BassBandit35 Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Lets see, KVD Paul Elias Dean Rojas Mike McClelland Gerald Swindle Shaw Gribsy Gary Klein Greg Hackney (former Shimano) Mike Wurm Zell Rowland Tommy Biffle and more...OH, and Bill Dance : Lot others in BASS are using Abu Garcia and few Pflueger. Can't think of who other than the salad bowl head J.Houston. My point is I get sick and tired of Shimano people badmouthing about Quantum all the time but don't see Quantum users doing that to a fan of Shimano. BTW, done with posting this thread so I'm gonna pour me a drink! Have a happy new year and be safe!
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted January 1, 2009 Super User Posted January 1, 2009 I bet all pros use garcia reels personally most likly c-3s
