zbass Posted December 24, 2008 Posted December 24, 2008 I didn't want to bump the other thread on this so I started a new one. Do you guys use the same knots mentioned in the other thread to join a flouro leader to braid? I experimented with this during the past year with very mixed results. some knots the braid cuts the flouro. Some knots would not hold under pressure. Some knots held during a pull test but not on the hook set. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted December 24, 2008 Posted December 24, 2008 I almost always use a flouro leader with braid. Uni to uni is the best knot I've found when considering: 1. strength 2. small diameter 3. ease/quickness of tying. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 24, 2008 Super User Posted December 24, 2008 I only use a FC leader (and I use LEADER MATERIAL, not reel fill) when dealing with abrasive cover or structure. The easiest and smallest profile knot to tie is a triple surgeon, but this is the first to fail from abrasion. A back to back uni connection is much more durable. If I am using a mainline that is much smaller in diameter than the FC leader, then I will first use a spider hitch knot to double the mainline, and give the leader something to bit into. Quote
Matt 825 Posted December 24, 2008 Posted December 24, 2008 I have found the blood knot to work best for me when I am joining braid to fluro when the lines are a very close match in terms of diameter. If they are off a bit like if I am tying 10 IB fluro to 6 IB diameter braid then a double uni knot works best. You just have to make sure that the knots come out perfect and the coils are not overlapping at all . If they overlap and you dont retie it then it will be snap-ar-ooo Quote
bpraz Posted December 24, 2008 Posted December 24, 2008 I always use a fluro leader tied to my power pro with a uni to uni knot an never had a problem , i just make shure to retie every couple of fish. Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted December 24, 2008 Super User Posted December 24, 2008 I only use one knot anymore. I run braid/flouro on 5 of my rods. I use the modified albright(aka alberto) knot. After spending a bunch of time using the uni to uni and the nail knot, this one outshines them BY FAR!. I like it for a few reasons : Strength: I honestly believe that this knot is stronger than any knot I tie on the terminal end ( palomar, uni, worlds fair) and much much stronger than the uni to uni. I believe that this is because the braid cannot cut into the flouro Size: By far the most low profile knot I have tried Slick: since there is no wrapped flouro, and no tag ends, it goes through guides and grass far better than any knot i have tried It is a pain to learn how to tie correctly, just because it is awkward, its a knot that requires all ten digits to tie ;D Once you figure out how to tie it efficiently, it is very easy to tie correctly. The more disparate the diameters/thinner the lines, the more wraps i use. With 10lb sufix braid and 10lb flouro, I use 7 up and 7 back. With 65lb braid and 26lb flouro, I go 5 and 5. Exiting the tag the same way you entered the loop seems critical. The modified albright also known as alberto's knotThis is what Alberto Knie (Crazy alberto) wrote about that knot "Since the *** of the super lines (about 10 years ago) there was no real mono to braid knots. And those common knots everyone recommended just didn't cut it! Because we are in the high-tech age and introducing a new material to the equation (braid with special coatings / Fluorocarbon leaders / non stretch fibers), I actually tried many recommended knots (with frustrations) so I came up with this knot for myself and I've been using ever since. I have a few friends (& some world record friends) who loves it and will not go back. In fact, it is being well received through out (from Mexico / Costa Rica / Florida and Canada) and I am glad everyone is enjoying it. The key to my knot is simple Make sure everything is "snug and tight". Once it is done correctly You should not have any problems! Although I noticed that there are new lines coming out with added slippery coatings (to allow more distance) it may be a good idea to dab it with crazy glue. Personally, I tie straight without it but if it adds confidence do it." I dont use glue, and i cinch it very tight with lots of saliva. Make sure the wraps dont cross, and I trim the tag ends extremely close (<1/32"). For the flyfishermen out there this is a VERY handy knot for leader construction and such. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 24, 2008 Super User Posted December 24, 2008 fourbizz, Your have developed quite a following around here, and I applaud you for a fresh perspective on technical technique and applications. Like many, I find all your comments and tips on swimbaits fascinating, but this post introduces a knot I have never heard of and fits another piece into the puzzle. Thank you. -Kent Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 24, 2008 Super User Posted December 24, 2008 I'm 90% sure this was a knot that used for steelheading with braid last winter, and it is a good one. Never a failure at the knot, even after several 10#+ fish. It is difficult to tie though. I dont use braid with chromies anymore, to it isn't necessary. I'm not sure if its worth fixing a non problem for my bass fishing, but I may revisit this. Quote
zbass Posted December 24, 2008 Author Posted December 24, 2008 Thanks for the quick replies! I've got a long winter for practicing tying knots. Thanks again! Merry Christmas! Quote

zbass Posted December 25, 2008 Author Posted December 25, 2008 Thanks Strike King. I found that also last winter but had forgotten about it. Thanks for refreshing my memory banks. : Quote

Avid put me on that knot last year. It is all I use for joining 2 lines. I use it on all my braid setups. It is the smallest knot I have found and holds the best. Quote

Super User J Francho Posted December 29, 2008 Super User Posted December 29, 2008 Could someone please elaborate the difference between fc line and fc leader material ?There is reel fill line, and there is leader material. Since stiffness and memory are not an issue with leader, no compromise is made to make it stay on the spool. Leader material is tougher and holds a knot better than reel fill line. Both work fine as leaders, but leader material is stronger.Reel fill: http://www.p-line.com/product_detail.php?id=102 Leader material: http://www.p-line.com/product_detail.php?id=105 Quote
Matt 825 Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 Fourbizz, I have been playing around with the Alberto knot that you mentioned and boy am I impressed with that knot. It is a real pain in the neck to tie and I had muscles in my hands hurting that I didnt even know I had when I was learning it. It is one mean looking knot and I'm pretty sure that it will replace the blood and Uni knot for me once I can tie it quickly. Thanks for sharing this knot with everyone. Quote
