Spinning Swimbait setup?

I was wondering your thoughts on this setup, I purchased it to use for heavy jigs and light Swimbaits.

-Okuma Spinning Reel Epixor 55a model http://www.okumafishingteam.com/reels/spinning/epixor.html

-Spinning rod RB-467 7'6" 1 Heavy 15-30 1 - 2oz Hurricane Redbone http://www.redbone.org/rods_info.html

I know I would have been better suited with a Baitcasting setup, but I havent mastered that skill yet. So for now Ill stick with what I know (spinning)

Glad to hear I am not alone on the spinning gear.  I have that exact rod with a Tierra 2500 and 50#braid for swim baiting.  I had and Acadia rod before that and the redbone is a huge step up in comfort.  It was a tough decision between the redbone or a tidemaster, but the price tags sorted it out for me.  

Ps.  It is usually more beneficial to ask opinions before buying.  Now that you have it and are using it you need to give us a review.

What kind of swimbaits are you throwing with a 2500 Tierra?

So far I only have Matt's Ultimate Blue Gill, 7" MS Slammer, and other similar sized Rapala baits.

I haven't run out of line and I have landed an 8# so I didn't think a bigger spool would make much difference?  Please let me know if i am overlooking somthing.

The line exceeds the rating for the reel, the lure exceeds the rating for the rod...I'm just amazed that a rod rated for 1/2 oz and a reel rated for 10lb test is capable of throwing those big baits without breaking.

I don't spinning gear is the right choice for heavy line techniques such as this but......

When I first bought a 7ft Heavy Clarus spinning rod I tried chucking a Mattlures Ultimate blue gill. Using 65lb test braid and a Quantum Energy Pti 40 model, it handled the bait fine.

Yet it is unpractical for me because I like using baitcasting gear much better.

True, I got the setup for a steal so I bought it and figured Id ask questions later. I plan to fish all weekend so Ill get you a review by Monday.

I don't want to rain on your parade but it sounds like overkill. Nice outfit if you are fishing kings or bonita ( 15-30 rod is even heavy for that).

I'm a real big fan of redbones rods, I own 6 of them, a lot of bang for the buck, you can't go wrong with them.

As far as the reel goes, if you are fishing mostly freshwater do you need a reel with that much weight and line capacity? Bass do not run like a snook or tarpon. I like what you bought, but I think it is better suited for the pier or surf.

Latley I have been using 7' 8-17 redbone with a pflueger 8035 supreme reel 15# braid, manhadles 10# snook, then I use it on on the way home in canals for bass and I think it's on the heavy side for that, but ok if I don't have a freshwater setup with me.

With that said I believe you have purchased a beautiful mid pirced outfit and best of luck with it.

Ill try it for swimbaiting and tossing large live bait. If its overkill than ill use it for Dolphin.  ;D

i use a shimano soujourn 25# rod and 5000 pflueger medalist for dolphin,bonita a kings ) it's really my cuda rod for throwing surgical tubes), but what you have is superior.............stronger lighter rod with lifetime warranty and comparable reel but yours is lighter.

I have a buddy that casts small rapalas a respectable distance with his 15-30 redbone 7' and it will handle 1 - 1 1/2 oz spoons and jigs with no problem.

I think yours is a sweet outfit for those species, I'm excited for you.

I did some similar with a 3/4 oz lure.Now my reel is not as smooth.I was actually shocked yours is performing the task.I snagged the lure too thinking something bit it and set the hook on it.

My 2500 tierra still works and all,but the smoothness factor isn't there anymore.Might just be me...but it really doesn't feel as smooth as it once did.I try to stick with 1/2 oz or less on that reel now.

I'm glad you can list some baits under 2oz, but I don't see how it is relevant considering the rod in question is only rated for 1/2 ounce.

NOT 1/2 ounce.  Thats a gliche on there website. The actuall rating on the rod is from 1 to 2 ounces.

Its funny, Because I couldnt understand where you were getting the 1/2 ounce thing till I checked the website. But yea thats a glitch, the rod is 7'6 Heavy  rated for lure weight from 1 to 2 oz.

Re : Tierra 2500.

I would send it back to daiwa for cleaning and maintenace if you are unhappy with the performance. The reel should either come back like new or they may just send a new one, they often do that. As you are in Michigan ( i'm originally from Birmingham)you won't be using now anyway.

My advice...........NEVER TAKE IT TO REEL REPAIR SERVICE, they don't always have the parts you made, always go back to the mfg. Specify that you want your line back ,if they send a new reel they will keep the old spool.

I "smooth " up my reels with corosion X or corrison block. It has the consistancy of light syrup. I put a drop or 2 on the spindle, the handle bearings and lube the bail area with it. I think it's terrific stuff and won't eat your bearings like pb blaster.  I also do this to a new reel right out of the box before I put it on the rod.

Well I have spent two straight days with this setup throwing swimbaits and heavy jigs. I haven't caught any monsters with the setup yet, but with the few Tourney size fish I did catch this rod performed perfect. Casting heavy swimbaits was not a problem. The reel performed smoothly and quietly. This set up is a must have for people wanting to throw heavy swimbaits with a spinning setup.
