NOVA Angler Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 I have an opportunity to buy a brand new Loomis GLX for less than half of what they retail. Not exactly a rod a I need since I just added another MBR844C to the arsenal but it seems like too good of a deal to pass up. Am I a fool to pass? Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted December 18, 2008 Super User Posted December 18, 2008 They retail at $355. I'd say it would be a deal I couldn't pass up. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted December 18, 2008 Super User Posted December 18, 2008 You shouldn't be asking if you should buy it. You should be deciding how many to buy. Quote
Redsyn Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Do yourself a favor and get it. Try it out, dont like it then sell it for $200. If you like it, you scored big! Quote
Super User cart7t Posted December 18, 2008 Super User Posted December 18, 2008 I have an opportunity to buy a brand new Loomis BCR803 GLX for $150. Not exactly a rod a I need since I just added another MBR844C to the arsenal but it seems like too good of a deal to pass up. Am I a fool to pass? A fool? Yes. Buy it, turn around and resell it for $200 - 250. Then buy the rod you want. Quote
Super User flechero Posted December 18, 2008 Super User Posted December 18, 2008 If you don't love it, you will profit on the sale. Quote
fathom Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 imo, it is the best of the bcr's. the only way you will lose is by not buying it. Quote
bassripper2000 Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Buy it.... i found an IMX for 150 and jumped on it... the GLX for 150........ No Brainer..... If you don't buy it, I will.... just tell me where. Quote
NOVA Angler Posted December 18, 2008 Author Posted December 18, 2008 Haha...okay okay...I'll buy it. Of all the rods I've bought, this one is probably the easiest to justify. I'm sure I'll love it. My brother is meeting the guy tomorrow to pick it up. My other two worm and jig rods are 7'1" so maybe it will be nice to have something a little shorter for pitching. Plus this will be my first GLX. I'll post back to let you know how hit works out. Quote
NOVA Angler Posted December 19, 2008 Author Posted December 19, 2008 My brother is meeting the guy this evening and I've given him direction and pictures of what to look for on the rod. Because the deal is so good, I'm starting to second guess it. If this rod was custom built from a blank is there anything that would give this away? Would it still have the same G Loomis logos on it? I just want to make sure it is a factory original. I have the guys phone number and address and I feel pretty good after speaking to him, but I'm starting to lose faith in people, especially with our economy the way it is. You never know what someone will do to make a buck. Let me know if you can think of anything that I should be looking for. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 19, 2008 Super User Posted December 19, 2008 It will look like a brand new G. Loomis! All Loomis rods have their name, model number, line parameters and weight guidelines on the blanks. Quote

If it was "custom built", you better question him some more... unless they started offering that blank VERY recently. It is not available from any supplier that I know of. On blanks that are sold to builders, Loomis supplies a decal with blank information, but the blank is not marked to the naked eye. Also the decals Loomis supplies with blanks are not the same as the decals used on the factory rods... so if you see the factory decals, I'd feel safe. But if you are told it's custom and it has a "BCR" decal- you are being taken. Besides, no one sells a custom built GLX for $150... even if they are starving. Quote
vicdotcom Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 If a deal is "too good to be true"... But there are the occasional exceptions! Just make sure it looks legit. Its worse that you arent the one inspecting it. Vic Quote
NOVA Angler Posted December 19, 2008 Author Posted December 19, 2008 He never said it was a custom built rod. I guess I'm just looking for some sort of possible deception. He says it still has the factory stickers on it. I told my brother if he sees anything that doesn't look exactly the same as the pictures I sent him to call me before he gives him the money. I may even have him send me a picture with his camera phone. He claims it was a gift and that he needs the quick cash. He said he would return it to a store but that he doens't have a receipt. I have his address and phone number but I don't know what good that will do me. He knows the value of the rod and even states that he's selling it cheap. I've made up my mind that I'm going through with it so I'll report back tonight and let everyone know the outcome. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted December 19, 2008 Super User Posted December 19, 2008 I have his address and phone number but I don't know what good that will do me. Playing devil's advocate here, but you have "an" address and possibly "his" phone number. Unless you have been there, this guy could be from Timbuktu (aka Burley's neck of the woods) Quote
NOVA Angler Posted December 19, 2008 Author Posted December 19, 2008 He didnt' give me the address. I looked him up on white pages. Could be the name of another person from his town I guess. I've spoken with him on the phone with the number he gave me. A reverse lookup of the phone number goes back to his name and address as well. Quote
Super User flechero Posted December 19, 2008 Super User Posted December 19, 2008 If he really wanted to rip someone off, he would sell it online, or not be willing to meet for personal inspections. JMO Quote

JMO True. Maybe he is a kidnapper and is trying to lure you in with a great deal? Kinda like a ninja bait monkey.... Quote

Maybe he is a kidnapper and is trying to lure you in with a great deal? Kinda like a ninja bait monkey.... Haha...funny you should mention that. I just got a call from my dad reading me the riot act about having my brother meeting someone neither of us know. My brother mentioned it to my sister last night and she freaked out and got on the phone with my parents. It's become a whole family affair. I'm 29 and my brother is 27...dad still doesn't trust our judgement I guess. I spoke with the guy for 20 or so minutes this afternoon. They're meeting in a very public place. I don't think he has anything to worry about. Stay tuned... Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 19, 2008 Super User Posted December 19, 2008 Man, this is a lot of drama for a $150 rod. I hope you don't buy a boat off the internet! : Quote
detroit1 Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 Not to worry - nobody can reproduce a Factory decal... ;D Quote
The Rooster Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 Well did you get the rod or am I gonna be seeing this on the news here in a little while?? "Two men met at a rest stop along the corridor of highway ____ in what appeared to be the sale of a fishing rod when one suddenly started horsewhipping the other one with the "fake" GLX rod in an attempt to get away with the victim's wallet. A nearby tourist caught the whole thing on tape......film at 11:00." Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted December 20, 2008 Super User Posted December 20, 2008 Well, do we need to put out an "Amber Alert"? NOVA, where is your little brother? Quick, someone call the ! Nova's brother is getting his . Quote
NOVA Angler Posted December 20, 2008 Author Posted December 20, 2008 Man, this is a lot of drama for a $150 rod. I hope you don't buy a boat off the internet! : Who are you telling? You don't know the half of it. OMG...you would have thought that I was sending my brother to his grave. I get a text message from my sister last night that says..."nice sending your brother to meet a guy at a gas station off the interstate to serve your own self interests." That's the first and last time I ever ask anyone in my family for help buying fishing equipment. Holy S! My family is crazy. Anyway, I got the rod...everything went off without a hitch...it's in perfect condition...brand spanking new. Was it worth it? HELL NO! Seriously you wouldn't believe the mess it caused. Next time I'll pay the guy the 30 bucks he's asking for to have it shipped. Quote
