Olebiker Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 I bought a couple of St. Croix Premier rods this year in spite of Muddy telling of problems with the guide inserts falling out. I love the rods, but yesterday the insert in the tip of one of the rods fell out. :'( Quote
The_Natural Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 I've got three rods right now missing inserts. One is a Lamiglas XMG 50, one is a Daiwa, and one is a Superlite. Guide inserts popping out happens....St. Croix uses the same fuji guides as any other company. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted December 8, 2008 Super User Posted December 8, 2008 That makes 11 Premier rods over 4 members. I would say that is a ST Croix Problem. Never happened with my Fenwicks or Cabelas . not once. Quote

xxmurrxx Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Im sure if you contact St. Croix they would help you with your problem. I did a rod upgrade, and a rod repair with ease through them. They always seems to do the best to help me out. Quote

I love the rods, but yesterday the insert in the tip of one of the rods fell out. :'( Regardless of the posts above, let me suggest that you replace your tips with Alconites (or even Fuji Hardloys) they are an upgrade, more durable than the Batsons but are still under $3 each. Super User Muddy Posted December 8, 2008 Super User Posted December 8, 2008 Thanks Fletch, I jumped ship and went back to Fenwick, which is where I should have stayed. Don't know till you try. I am also pleased with All Star's and Cabelas Fish Eagle II all three have given nothing short of perfect satisfaction. Quote

Well, to keep things in perspective, There probably wasn't a time in those 40 years that you had access to data from 17,000+members and their friends. We get info now that is better than marketing studies of years past, just from member input. We have an international cross section of the fishing public from beginners to pros. As a side note on the guides... the batson tips aren't bad, they are just not as stout and durable as the fujis. Hit the tips a couple times and inserts get loosened. It just takes more abuse to knock out a fuji insert... but I see a lot of them knocked out as well. (that's why most tackle shops and sporting goods stores carry tips and the tip kits) Although I am much more careful these days... I have knocked out a 1/2 dozen or so tips in the past.... both fuji and others. It happens. Quote
The_Natural Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 I've got three rods right now missing inserts. One is a Lamiglas XMG 50, one is a Daiwa, and one is a Superlite. Guide inserts popping out happens....St. Croix uses the same fuji guides as any other company. I don't know anything as a rod builder... 8-)Yea and your another expert here huh.. : Thats why the St.Croix website shows this for the premier series rods # Premium-quality SCII graphite. # Outstanding strength, sensitivity and hook-setting power. # Finely tuned actions and tapers for superior performance. # Batson Forecast® hard aluminum-oxide guides with double-plated black chrome frames. # Flanged SiC top on musky models. # Fuji® ECS or TCS reel seat/frosted silver hood. # Premium-grade cork handle. 8-) Didn't claim to be an expert....just sharing my experience. My point was that inserts pop out....Fuji or Batson. I wasn't aware Croix used Batson at all....my Avid has Alconites. Maybe it's worse with the Batson rings, but the problem doesn't seem to descriminate with me. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 9, 2008 Super User Posted December 9, 2008 The_Natural, Thank you for a pleasant response to a rather aggressive post. However, although you may have been mistaken about the guides used on the Premier, that does not change the fact that you are in fact, an expert. We appreciate your participation and all of the helpful advice you contribute to this Forum. -Kent a.k.a. roadwarrior Global Administrator Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted December 11, 2008 BassResource.com Administrator Posted December 11, 2008 ddigit's response clearly isn't representative of the fine folks here on the forums. His overly aggressive and negative comments are not appreciated here. Quote

Tokyo Tony Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Never had any problems with my Premier; I love it to death. x2 - I have a Premier casting rod that's about 2 years old and has gotten beaten up quite a bit. Great spinnerbait/chatterbait rod. No problems at all. Quote
Super User Tin Posted December 11, 2008 Super User Posted December 11, 2008 They were my work horses back in the day until I found Kistler's and such. I still own 2, one for spinnerbaits and one for froggin. But St. Croix's are becoming obsolete imo. Quote

Super User Grey Wolf Posted December 11, 2008 Super User Posted December 11, 2008 I've fished a premier glass rod for three years , no problems yet. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted December 11, 2008 Super User Posted December 11, 2008 Premier Glass have different guides WI guys all love ST Croix, they are a major business for that state I would say a true best value has the name FENWICK on the side, HMG and TECHNIA AV BTW: St Croix other lines all have great reputations around these parts, I am just partial to the rods I have used for a long time, It is this issue , with Premiers only that is a real , well documented issue that I and my friends have experienced first hand. And the Avid's have not been the best deal for a while. Even before Carrots there were Airrus's. It's like comparing a broomstick to a feather. ;D Quote

The legend tournament edition are just like the "new" rods, split grip and no fore grip. And they have a better array of actions, carrot sticks are very limited Quote
