Cast Control Knob On Baitcast Reels Question

I've used braid for quite a few years & am now starting to go to mono, more like P-line CXX.

I keep the star drag loose when I'm not using a particular b/c reel, so the washers don't get compressed too much. But since I'm starting to use mono & winter is amongst us(ice on top of the water), I keep the b/c & spinning reels drags loose.

Now the problem I am running into w/ some of the b/c reels that I have 10 or 12 lb CXX is that since I keep the star drag loose, the line will spin on the spool easily & start coming undone. Now, can I keep the cast control knob on tighter than the star drag to keep tension on the spool, so the line doesn't unravel? I don't think that there are any washer like on the star drag that can get compressed & get ruined. Am I right about this, or should I keep the cast control knob loose also?

At one time I used 12lb CXX and when not in use always loosen drag on reels. Hope I'm not leading you astray but have never loosened or tightened cast control when not in use. Bought some little clip type things (real technical ain't I :-[) at BPS to hold line at end of rod or remove reel from rod and they hold the line at level wind. Usually put reels in covers (BPS) between trips. Hope I understood the question and helped ...

When not in use I definitely keep the drag fully backed off and the cast control at a setting that is also quite loose.  I use a piece of tape to keep line down.  All you have to do is use a piece of tape that is long enough to go around the spool and get taped to itself. If this is not done, the tape can fall off.

Lastly, just in case, doing this is 1000 times easier to do with the spool off out of the reel. Add the tape to the spool and place spool back into the reel.

When I was training with ReelMechanic I learned that loosening the drags was a relative term. Loosening the drag from a 2/3 of line strength setting to fully disengaged is not necessary, loosen the drag enough to relieve the pressure on the drag spring washers and drag pads, but not so much that the spool is free turning.

I don't think I have ever backed off the CCCap on a reel when storing.

Just my .02¢ learned from a pro.

Your comment about the line spinning on the spool has me confused. I was trying to think this through when I decided that you meant the spool was turning from lack of drag pressure. If this is the issue then tightening your cast control enough to prevent doesn't present a problem.
