bpraz Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 Does anyone use a flurocarbon leader tied with uni to uni knot to braid? Quote
shimanogloomis man Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 yes i use berkley 100%floro leader imo its the best iv ever used Quote
Super User CWB Posted December 2, 2008 Super User Posted December 2, 2008 Uni to Uni is only way to go. Quote
TournyFish001 Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 I had a lot of success with this setup last season, I like the albright knot with 8 wraps myself- you can use the braid for long periods of time and use super high end flouro all year with out braking the bank due to short leader versus a whole spool at a time usage- and yes the quality of flouro matters- did I mention almost zero line twist as well- Quote
TrippyJai Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 What is a good leader? I've been using BPS flouro. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted December 3, 2008 Super User Posted December 3, 2008 Yes, but not for the line visibiliby issues some are concerned with. I use the fluorocarbon as weight to make the braid sink for weightless soft plastic presentations. The uni-uni connection is the only one I use. As far a line twist is concerned, using braid does not lessen any twisting caused by the tackle or presentations, its just not affected by twisting like the stiffer mono lines are. XPS is my choice for fluorocarbon line. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted December 3, 2008 Super User Posted December 3, 2008 All of my rods are fitted with braided line, and all of my rods have an XPS fluro leader. I tried the uni to uni knot and had a few failures. I have since switched to the Stren knot. It is exponentially stronger than the Uni/Uni knot and it has never failed. My Palomar knot at the hook will always fail before the Stren knot. Do a search on this site for the knot. It's where I found it. Quote
bpraz Posted December 3, 2008 Author Posted December 3, 2008 Hey thanks guys i thought the fluro might be brittle , but i will give it a try. Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 That's all I use - Power Pro with a flouro leader connected by a double Uni knot. IMO, the double Uni is the best all-around knot for this application when considering strength, small size, ease/quickness of tying. I've tried over 10 different brands of flouro for leader, and Berkley 100% is the best, IMO. Very abrasion resistant, low stretch, and almost 100% invisible. 8-) Quote
lubina Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 I'm a P-line user but I've tried the cheaper BPS-XPS with out any problems. Currently for leaders I go P-line and for full spool I take BPS. Since I found the Crawford knot I haven't use the Uni. http://www.stripersurf.com/knot_terminal.html Quote
Bassboss Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 I don't mean to steal the thread, but what lb test do you use most of the time? Quote
Matt 825 Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 I use a fluro leader to braid line all the time. I mostly tie a blood knot to connect the lines if they are equal diameter. If they are not equal diameter then I will tie the Uni knot. I feel the blood knot is just a bit stronger than the Uni and I can tie the blood knot much quicker. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted December 4, 2008 Super User Posted December 4, 2008 I tried the uni to uni and didn't like the size of the knot. I switched to the Alberto's knot. It is small and needs no glue. http://www.stripersonline.com/Pages/Articles/article_arby_albertos_knot.shtml Quote

When ever I use it, with braid and fluro, the braid cuts the fluro! But other wise It's a great knot for tying mono to mono and braid to braid, holds strong in my experience. Quote

When you go to pull it tight ( I use my teeth) it almost always does not catch. What you have to do is take the tag end of the braid and hold it tight in your teeth and then pull the main braid line and you will hear a pop. Then pull your fluro leader and the main braid line and it will come out perfect. Quote

TrippyJai Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 If I am using 50lb braid with a 12lb diameter, should I always be matching it up with a 12lb fluoro? Since flouro is invisible underwater, can I get away with 15+ lbs fluoro, or the connection between 2 different diameters not work well together. I mean I do standard fishing and all, but let's say I had to only choose 1 pack of leader line. Maybe I want 17lb that can cover both weightless sinko and heavy cover jig fishing. Advice? Quote
