underwraps1 Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Can I use a 1/2 OZ jig on a Medium rod? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 1, 2008 Super User Posted December 1, 2008 Sure, they are generally rated to 5/8 oz and even with a trailer, you will be fine. On the other hand, I bet you would find a heavier rod more suitable. 8-) Quote
TrippyJai Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 I think the problem is pulling a fish out of cover. A heavier rod will be better at it. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted December 1, 2008 Super User Posted December 1, 2008 I do it all the time with no issues Quote
LOW7681 Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 I would prefer to fish a 1/2 oz. jig on a medium heavy or heavy action casting rod made by Shimano or St. Croix (or other similar action rods) as their bass casting rods have a stiff action. I would not fish a 1/2 oz jig with a G Loomis medium action mag bass casting rod as its action is much less stiff in action than the above rods. . But, my opinion only. Just prefer to work jigs which are bulky and usually have large hooks with a stiffer rod than a working a similar weight lure like a worm with a 1/2 oz weight. . Quote
mattm Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 What weight is the rod weighted up to. Medium means nothing. I have a MEDIUM swimbait rod that is rated 1/2oz on the bottom and 3 oz on the top. Quote
mattm Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 Also I always try to stay right in the middle or on the low end of what the rod is weighted for when fishing a jig. 90% of the time I'm fishing timber and I find that if I'm over or pushing the weight limit the rod tends to load a little bit when pulling it over a branch resulting in more hang ups. Super User 5bass Posted December 2, 2008 Super User Posted December 2, 2008 In my opinion a Medium is too light for a 1/2 oz jig. Not so much in casting the jig but I would worry about a solid hookset, especially if you had a lot of line out. I like to lay down a rock solid hookset when fishing a jig. I seriously doubt the medium could do that consistently. Quote
-nick- Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 I used a cheap shakespeare old rod I had with a 3/8 jig and caught a 9lbs bass with no problem. I would consider the rod medium-light. I'm surprised i havn't broken it yet, thats how flimsy it is. You should be fine Quote
bigfruits Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 sure, but youd be better off with 3/8 oz. remember the trailer has weight. it would prob feel better in a mh (1/4-3/4 oz lure rating) Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted December 2, 2008 Super User Posted December 2, 2008 Can I use a 1/2 OZ jig on a Medium rod? Yes but you shouldn't. Quote
swimbait Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 I agree with you can but shouldn't. A jig has a large hook and weed guard. You should have some backbone for a solid hookset. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted December 3, 2008 Super User Posted December 3, 2008 I fish jigs every time I hit the water. I use the same hooks for 3/8 as I do for the 1/2. I go strictly on feel and the 1/2 feels too heavy for me. I use the 1/2 and more on MH or H. JMO. Quote
LAO162 Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 A call to the manufacturer might provide some insights. For instance, Shimano CS provides a lot of insight about the uses for their rods. I've never been disappointed with the quality of their answers. However, others are not so good. Often, it depends on the rep who answers. Quote
bighed Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 Like others have already said, hookset and horsing a fish out of cover is the problem. Take your medium outfit and have a buddy hold the jigs hook between forefinger and thumb so as not to be hooked. Then step back about the distance of your casts and try setting the hook. Odds are you won't even be able to pull the jig from the buds fingers. Quote
Super User Tin Posted December 4, 2008 Super User Posted December 4, 2008 I wouldn't but it depends on the rod. Some manufacturers like Airrus make a medium action that is similiar to a medium-heavy Croix or Loomis. Quote
