TrippyJai Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 I was wondering how long I can keep a bulk spool of line. I want to get McCoy Mean Green line and I only have 1 Spinning reel mainly because I use the bait casters. If I were to buy a big bulk, I feel like it would take me years to finish. Does fishing line get old or die with age? Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted November 3, 2008 Super User Posted November 3, 2008 Keep it in a cool, dark area. What if you change brands in a year though? Quote
TrippyJai Posted November 3, 2008 Author Posted November 3, 2008 If I change brands, then I will definitely have the bulk line sitting around for a few years. I hope it still works fine. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted November 3, 2008 Super User Posted November 3, 2008 Don't buy a year's worth of line unless you are going to use it. Get smaller spools and try a few different brands before making up your mind. Although I recommend Yo-Zuri Hybrid and Hybrid Ultra Soft, I'm currently experimenting with P-Line CX Premium and Gamma copolymer on a couple of rigs. So far, so good! 8-) Quote
NBR Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 Big spools are more economical. I have used them for some time without any problems. Mono needs to be stored in moderate temperatures and away from sunlight. I just took old line off of a reel that I had not used in over 40 years. I was surprised that I could not break by hand what appeared to be about 12# mono. I am not endorsing using line that old. I use more Trilene XL in 12# than any other so I buy a big spool every few years and use smaller spools of the other lines I use. Quote
Super User Raul Posted November 3, 2008 Super User Posted November 3, 2008 Does fishing line get old or die with age? It depends on how you store it, I purchase 10 and 12 lbs test ( the ones I use the most ) in lb spools. Stored in a cool, relatively moist and dark place it lasts for years. Quote
big bass Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 i'm with Raul on this. i have a spool of 10# green berkley big game that i have had for at least 5 years... still good as gold. i keep it in the house, inside a tupperware and in a closet. plenty dark and cool Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted November 11, 2008 Super User Posted November 11, 2008 I have been buying Pline mono in 3000 yd spools for years. I do use it on more than one reel though. Quote
Super User flechero Posted November 11, 2008 Super User Posted November 11, 2008 call or email the company and ask... I did that with Berkley a while back and they guarantee 3 years of shelf life if stored properly with no deterioration. Quote
The Next KVD Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 Treating the bulk spool with KVD Line & Lure Conditionor will help add life to the line. I've alwayz bought line in bulk and the conditionor really helps during storage. I still have a spool of Trilene that Im storing for the past 3 years and i use it to spool up my friends reels and it still performs great! Quote
kikstand454 Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 that line you bought at wal mart in a pinch sat on a shelf in a stocking warehouse for at LEAST a year....probably longer. Quote
