I.rar Posted October 31, 2008 Author Posted October 31, 2008 ive seen the new 1000 size , but im trying to do this on a budget , so that extra $20-30 can go to the rod. did you get yours in yet? yours is absolutely beautiful!!! mine (stitch) was much more subdued. love your habitat too!! thanks , shes very spoiled. i built the cage myself , and overdid it a bit. shes happy though. bigfruits Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 nope, just ordered it last night. i think the new sahara 1000 retails for 80 so you might be able to find it 10 or 20 bucks cheaper.... Quote
I.rar Posted October 31, 2008 Author Posted October 31, 2008 well i was about to order one of the two shimanos untill i noticed there is now a $10 difference between the sahara and symetre. maybe there was before i was having a 'moment' or they really did. is the $10 worth the extra bearing? everything else seems to be the same for the 750 size. the symetre line uses metal frames on the larger sizes. something id prefer on which ever reel i get. the pflueger president 6720 is starting to look a bit better for the same price as the symetre. just less line capacity. i was almost SET on the shimano's after reading this review a few times - http://www.tackletour.com/reviewshimanosahara.html ah ... choices , choices. Flywatersmallie Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 6'6" ML Avid with a 1500 "new" Sahara. Also have a Saros without a home, likely another Avid. Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted October 31, 2008 Super User Posted October 31, 2008 St. Croix Avid AVS66MLF/ Stella 100FA is what I have. This rig is well-balanced and fits the niche perfectly. I use the rod for white bass, crappie and stocker trout. Originally it was my first "smallmouth rod", but the guy that recommended it obviously had never caught a good fish! 8-) Quote
I.rar Posted October 31, 2008 Author Posted October 31, 2008 some nice rigs mentioned here. can anyone comment on the pflueger presidents construction? mainly the body/frame. i just want something that will last me a good while. the 6725 looks pretty tempting. also , is there any reason i cant go with a light action rod with a smaller reel like that? i was looking at the ugly stick lites - http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?id=0023483112342a&navCount=2&podId=0023483&parentId=cat20374&masterpathid=&navAction=jump&cmCat=MainCatcat20166-cat20374&catalogCode=IJ&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20374&hasJS=true the 5.6 ft 2 piece. its rated for the same lure weight, just bigger line. Super User bilgerat Posted November 1, 2008 Super User Posted November 1, 2008 More than likely it's graphite, which is fine for light/ultra lite. IMO graphite is fine until you get up into the larger size reels. Larger size graphite frames can twist and distort under the strain of a very large fish, which can wreak havoc with the gear alignment. But for what you're looking for, graphite will be fine. You will NOT be disappointed by the Pflueger. The Supreme is a magnesium frame, but now you're talking $100. Quote

Just a little food for thought here, you might be far better served to step up to something like a St Croix Triumph.... Will cost like $10 more than the Ugly Stik but you would end up with a LOT more rod. Ugly Sticks are not exactly known for sensitivity. I think you would be happy with that choice. Quote

I do use it for smallies here on local rivers where the possibility of a 5lb fish is there but they are not a regular thing. Works great for grubs, smaller tubes and the like and for fish up to maybe a couple pounds. Otherwise, its a perfect stick for walleyes, whitebass and the like. Enough backbone when you need it but its got a nice soft tip for those applications that call for it. Quote

kikstand454 Posted November 2, 2008 Posted November 2, 2008 my uglystick ultra lite is plenty sensitive. esp. the "lite" series, they are graphite/glass composites. as sensitve as the st.croix? prollly not. but its indetructable and can bring in a much much bigger fish with out fear of snapping. Super User bilgerat Posted November 3, 2008 Super User Posted November 3, 2008 Muddy can explain. It's not a bad thing. Â Congrats on the new Flooger, you will enjoy it. Keep it clean and lubed, it'll last for years. Just two things to keep in mind: Use line conditioner and ALWAYS close the bail manually after every cast. Post back when you get some fish. Quote
I.rar Posted November 3, 2008 Author Posted November 3, 2008 ah , ok. should i give it some fresh lube when i recieve it? something like the 'hot sauce' or is there others i should look into? also , i made it a habit long ago to manually close the bail. i will definatly post back with pictures when i get some fish. I.rar Posted November 3, 2008 Author Posted November 3, 2008 well , now im not sure wether i should go with a L or UL rod. im set on the ugly stick lites since thats right in my budget and the fiance wont let me spend any more than that , lol. looking to order tonight. link - http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp;jsessionid=PN31XFPU3HBDRLAQBBKSCOFMCAEFAIWE?id=0023483112342a&navCount=2&podId=0023483&parentId=cat20374&masterpathid=&navAction=jump&cmCat=MainCatcat20166-cat20333-cat20333-cat20374-cat20374&catalogCode=IJ&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20374&hasJS=true&_requestid=78379 ive never fished either either a UL or L so i dont really know how they will handle a larger fish if one takes the bait. or how the 6725 will suit either size rod. and thanks for all the replies. You might even notice more catches and hook ups, as it is something that light line does. Also, don't be too worried about a light action or UL rod not being able to "handle" larger fish. Barring super heavy cover and using a decent ul rod, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Â Light action rods if designed well serve you by protecting your light line, much the same as any other rod. You just have to trust your equipment and ensure that your reel's drag is correctly set. If you still can't get over that hump, then know and picture this. There are people in my area that target large king salmon up to 30 lbs on UL salmon rods with as little as 4-6 lb. test. Â Now if they can land such a big fish, there is no doubt that you and your UL rig can handle say a 6# bass. There is nothing like watching the parabolic bend of a UL rod, protecting light line as you battle a fish. Ahhh yeah... Quote
I.rar Posted November 3, 2008 Author Posted November 3, 2008 ha , thanks. ill go ahead and snag the UL. can you comment on the reel lube/grease? edit - also , whats the popular line to go with on these rigs? ive always used 10lb on my M rods... Quote
Super User islandbass Posted November 4, 2008 Super User Posted November 4, 2008 6# mono is a great choice. I like to use Trilene XL. Â It casts great and I have never ever lost a fish with this line. Let us know if you notice more strikes and hits vs. lines of thicker diameter. I noticed it but I am wondering if it is just in my head. Quote
Jake. Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 I use 4 lb. Suffix Elite, I think if you go any higher than 4 lb. it's not really ultralight (just my opinion). Quote
I.rar Posted November 4, 2008 Author Posted November 4, 2008 well , i will be using it in some saltwater while im still down here in miami. also, alot of lakes around here are full of peacock and they put up a mean fight. a few of the ones i cought up in broward on my medium action ugly stick combo.. i pulled up 6 that day all similar in size.
