Zara Spooks

Friends & Neighbors,

 Usually I seem to prefer more natural colored baits and that goes for top water baits to. Ol' Banana Breath convinced me that I needed a Spook Jr. and thought I would ask about colors. Could I get some feed back on colors ya'll like for Spooks? Thanks ...

Remember the usually on see the bottom of a topwater.  Clear with rattles is always my favorite. And definatley do what t-rig said about replacing hooks, on the bigger versions put on 2 split rings to connect the body to the hook.

I have heard that a white or orange belly is a good choice. I think the action of the bait is more of a factor than the color. But a baby bass or perch/firetiger might be a good choice.

My favorite color combo for walk the dog baits consists of usually a black back with blue sides and either a white or clear belly

These 2 are just about my favs. Chrome with black head and back and black shore minnow.I use the black for night or very early morn or muddy water.

I know clear bottom types are awesome as they disguise the true nature of the bait in clear water,but I dont fish much clear water.

I have several colors, however, the clear one seems more effective and now it is the first one I tie on. I think the action is more the trigger than the color. Good luck.

Action, cadence, speed = splash/ noise (colors are blurred anyway)

Two split rings on the rear hook

Replace original rear hook with a quality treble (the front hook is usually a size smaller than the rear on my Spooks; I find it keeps the nose higher than the usual rigged trebles)

I've fished Spooks and Sammies for years and I like certain colors, but wouldn't rule out the favorites mentioned. Shore Minnow, clear, fire tiger, bass (lm or sm) and pearl are the only colors I would replace if lost.

Braid is a must.

Has anyone used red trebles on Spooks?

Sorry for jackin your topic skillet. Ive used spooks forever now but have never put two split rings on them. What is the purpose for this anyway??

2 split rings instead of one allows the trebles to swing a full 360* around so it is much harder for the fish to throw the bait or have the trebles tare in the fishes mouth.  Where as 1 = 180* of rotation.

I think I have posted my opinion of CLEAR Zara Spook Jr. and Zara Puppies here all Summer and now into the Fall.  I prefer clear on all types of water because as someone mentioned, it's harder for the fish to determine the profile and what is actually making all of the rucus up top.  It's VERY effective in clear water if worked just fast enough where the bass doesn't get a good look at it.  A med. quick, tug-tug-tug-tug will walk the dog but do not let it settle for a long time.  I'll let it settle for no more than 1-2 seconds and then walk it again.  In muddy water, I'll slow it down to a slower retrieve and vary the action.  The more erratic it is, the more believable it is.

My favorite colors are clear, bone white, baby bass, and that dark minnow color someone posted above.

By the way, the smaller Lucky Craft Sammys have MUCH better action and they are easier to walk the dog too.  I will be adding a small "puppy size" Sammy to my arsenal next spring.

Oh and the issue about the hooks, thank you for mentioning two split rings.  I've lost more bass and some good ones too because they managed to shake off.  I'll have to do this on my current baits.

My collection of Spooks includes most colors and tinted "clears". I really don't think it makes much difference and I like green! I probably haven't actually fished anything but a Frog Pattern in years. As a matter-of-fact, ever since I started fishing Sammys, I rarely fish a spook. Oddly, the Sammy I fish almost exclusively is Aurora Black (blue).

(Isn't it crazy that we own all this stuff and never use it?)

IMO topwater is about size, action, and color contrast.  Clear/reflective, white, yellow/orange, black.  Pick what you like.

my favorite is black with a white strip the width of a pencil on the belly.  It's my friends and I haven't been able to find it anywhere, but man could it catch fish.

I also like a feather dressed rear treble.

I like chrome for day, black for night, although this year I was doing really well with a black one during the day.  I also have many colors, and it doesn't really seem to make much of a difference with topwaters.  I did just get a clear Super Spook Jr, so I'm looking forward to trying that baby out next year.

All my topwater lures are white or yellow bottomed. I use different colored tops depending on visibility (for me). I prefer to use the darkest top I can see well, given the light conditions. As an example, I'll throw a dark top one when the sun is bright. I'll switch to or go with a light green type color on cloudy day's or lower sun, and brighter top as it gets darker out. The spook color's I like the best are Bone, Bullfrog, Natural frog, and Baby bass. I have not tried a clear one, but wouldn't mind giving it a try. The only Spooks I have are the original size one's though. If I had to choose just one, I think I would go with the bullfrog.

 Something else I'll throw in here: All Spooks have rattles in them now whereas (Wow, never got to use that word before ;D) the originals didn't. Any thoughts on this...
