how about those quantum baitcast reels

i think these are the best baitcast reels out there i have always been a shimano man, but i bought a quantum a year or so ago and it has not needed any oil or anything it is as smoothe as it was from day one.  the shimanos on the other hand need oil often and do not seem to be as smoothe as they were what does everyone else think about quantum?

I agree, the Quantum Energy bait casting reels are all I own.  They are very smooth indeed.  My Quantum spinning reels are also very smooth, but a couple of them are developing some handle slop.  The only negative thing I can say about the Quantum's, is the weight.  They weigh quite a bit more than other top end reels.

Have had alot, still have a few. Never had a problem with any of them. Actually sold a few that I wish I still had before I joined the Shimano Possee.

Like the rest, I thoroughly enjoy my Quantum Energy PT, am buying another one today, and can't wait til 2009 and get the new Energy PT or Tour Edition PT, both are under 8 ounces in weight.

I just bought the code in the burner version. It is very smooth and the brake seems to work great for me. The fact that I, as a first time BC user, can pick up this reel and cast it w/o birdsnest is saying something.

I'd have to say I like my Quantums (own 14) , Never once had a problem . So I'm pretty much set and don't for see buying anything different in the near future .

i have the incyte spinning reel and the kvd bc.

and i just recently bought the accurist pts saltwater.

i love them all and have had no trouble at all with any of them esp. the incyte which is the greatest spinning reel ive ever owned.

and i fish both fresh  and heavy salt. (not with the kvd of course.. but with the other two.)

I have two Quantum PT's and they both cast very well if you get them set up right, but they seem to require more fiddling with the controls to get them right on for the lure/line being used.  Just changing lures often requires adjustments to both controls.

One is smooth as silk, the other a little less so, and it makes more noise on the cast.  I haven't been able to get the second one to be as nice as the first (actually the smoother one is about two years newer than the other).

I think from what I've read on this forum, I'll try a Shimano Curado next.  By the way, my best casting reel is a 15 year old Calcutta with I think two ball bearings and the roller clutch anti reverse.  It's not all about bearing count.

I've got two Incytes on my bench right now with rusted roller bearings.  This should not happen when fishing freshwater for one summer.  Very similar to what I experienced with another relatively inexpensive Quantum I tried out.  I'm telling this customer to try and get a store credit for something else, as they should still be under warranty.    TOTAL JUNK!  I'll bet 90% OF Quantum's customers buy these $50 type of reels, and it makes no sense to me that they continually diss these people by using crap parts.  The old saying, :"You get what you paid for," does not apply here. This is why I recommend Daiwa and Shimano.

after trying to stick with quantums for the past few years i've finally had to just get rid of them all. i had dealer who could always get a me good deals on them and i liked them but i always tried to over look the little things wrong with them. but after using a brand new code i only paid 60 bucks for in a tournament a few weeks ago i'm done with anything quantum. i lost the tournament because of a drag that didn't work. i was using 50 pound braid throwing a sammy to schooling spots. had a 5 pounder drill it and lost the fish because of a drag that didn't work. i had spooled it that morning and just set the drag almost all the way down. didn't test it really which was my fault but still didn't think twice about it. knowing that most fish on 50 pound braid was going to be pulled right into the boat. well i set the hook and it was like the drag never was there. as soon as i started to reel it was like the drag was as loose as it gets lost the fish and it cost me and my partner the tournament. after that i gave the reel to a guy at the weigh in and then gave all my quantums away. back to shimano and nothing else from now on.

Go buy a couple of those $60 Shimano Crestfire's or Coriolis's and then come back and tell us how good Shimano is. It more than likely was the braid slipping and had nothing to do with the drag.

Yep, he probably forgot to use a backer.  Classic user error.  Can't tell you how many "broken reels" I've "fixed" by respooling with a backer, LOL.

I see a lot of comments about how good the PT's are at least with the original poster. How many of you have used the 90's era Quantum®, Energy, Tour, Accurist CX's, etc., these are where Quantum® lost their backers before the PT systems.

I'll second that, probably no backer on the arbor, or fresh slick line cutting into itself...

It has been my experience that no modern reel is as bad as its detractors say it is, and no modern reel is as good as its cheerleaders say it is.  It has also been my experience that when I've lost a fish it is because I've done something stupid, not because of a failure of my equipment.  All of the equipment we use is vastly overdesigned for bass.
