Daiwa Capricorn which one ?? and general opinions on Daiwa reels..

Hey all....

I am a Daiwa fan working my way up to a Steez set-up..

A few days ago, there was another thread that was deleted by one of the moderators because it got heated (I guess???) I'd like to hear peoples opinions on Daiwa reels, and rods for that matter, I ask this question knowing how people here are VERY loyal to THERE brands and respect that. Please be nice so this thread doesn't get deleted.  

PS I was advised by a poster on here that there are TWO different Capricorns, a lower end model made for Dicks and a higher end reel. Don't remember who it was, but thanks for that info. I was able to pick up a new 2500 model non Dick's Capricorn for $60.00.

Yeah, the Dick's model is the orange one. From what I remember from working at dick's, they were one of those reels that were always on sale. They seemed decent, but I have heard about some durability issues.

I have three Capricorn XTC spinning reels. Two have seen a full season of bass fishing and one has been through two salmon runs, two brown runs, and many winter and spring steelhead. That alone is testimony to the drag. There is an older version of Capricorn, upon which the last Cabela's Prodigy was based. A very nice reel, but hard to find since they were so well built. I also have two silver Super Tuned Capricorn baitcasters. There is a slightly lower end XTC model available at Dick's as well. They are built on the Procaster platform, which includes the Rojo. The silver Capricorns are also tough to find. They are a little heavy, but very smooth.

I also own several other Daiwa products, and my preference for them is formed solely on my preference for a magnetic brake. Daiwa engineer the best mag brakes out there. My collection includes two TD-X HSDL flipping reels, a TD-Z, a Sol, a TD-A, a TD-A Black Widow II, two Capricorns, and soon another Sol and a Fuego.

I have also owned several Shimano reels, both spinning and baitcasting gear. They are excellent as well, even their "entry level" stuff is very well made. It amazes me at how smooth my old Stradic is compared to lesser reels with twice as many bearings. I had an old Citica that looked as though it was used as a hammer, but was as smooth as it was when brand new.

Either way, I think you cannot go wrong with Daiwa or Shimano.

the post your refering to is on page 2. i never owned a capricorn,but i do like the Daiwa advantage-A. it reminds me of the Caldia kix.

I have the Dick's Daiwa Capricorn spinning reel in the 2500 size. I can't speak highly enough about this reel. You get a lot for the money with 8 bearings, machined aluminum handle and an aluminum body. It is my favorite go to reel for smallmouth fishing. I really like Daiwa's ABS spools over reels with the narrow long cast spools.

I have other lower end Daiwa reels that I use and they have all served me well. I generally stick with Daiwa, Shimano and Pflueger products so I am rarely disappointed.

 I have owned 2 procaster 100H's an older procaster (or triforce, I don't remember which for sure) back when I was in my teens, and most recently a hyper speed TD Zillion...I have loved all of them. (I too like their brakes)

If I didn 't think so highly about it I wouldn 't have that many.  

I think that you get a lot of features for your money when you purchase Daiwa spinning reels.

Yup there are 2 different capicorns out there. The Dick's orange one and the other normal one.

The Dick's isn't as good but also isn't as expensive. I own 3 of the Dick's reels thanks to a mis-price at my local store. I like them alot and think they are good reels for the money if you can get them on sale. By sale I mean something lower then the "sale" they always seem to have on them for $70.

I've fished these reels very hard and never had any problems with them. I think they are a good bang for the buck and have never been disappointed in the Diawa reels I own

Are you talking the 07 models or 08?  I bought one of these last winter on clearance (07 model) and I absolutely LOVE the thing.  It is the tightest and smoothest spinning reel I have ever used.
