I.rar Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 This will be my first 'real' rod and reel combo. All my others have been $20-30 store bought combo's. For a reel , id like to spend around $70. So far I keep finding myself eyeing the new Shimano Saraha SH1000FD , and the Pflueger President series since ive seen the name recommended alot around here. And for a rod , probably something around $40. All of my previous combos have been ugly sticks and I have had no problems with them. What im looking for is a good light action 2 piece deal that can take a bit of abuse since it will be sitting in the car or truck and can be used for fresh and salt water. I know I wont be bringing in Dolphin or Tuna and I dont intend to , just whatever I catch at the local marina and the cousins lake. Any suggestions , tips or pointers? Thanks alot in advance. Quote
NBR Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 While the reels you mention are fine. I would look at the BPS combos. While I have outfits that are superior, I have also paid a lot more for them. BPS combos have always seemed to be a good value. Quote

family guy Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 the cabelas prodigy spinner is a nice reel in the 2500-3000 range.79.99 it's a little more money but it's worth it(DAIWA)! the ugly intercoastel series rod are about 40$, i have one,i use it for both fresh/salt water, no problem. Quote

I bought my reel 20% off..... they have a lot of the reels you mentioned there...... I would recommend you might try the Shimano Symetre 2500 FI reel and pair it with a All star select rod...... I've had mine for a couple of months and really love it........ They also have a Pflueger President combo there as well........ I have a President and its a great reel, but I like the the Symetre much better..... smoother and casts way farther...... good luck. Quote

All reels require maintance to keep them operating at 100 % effeciency. So I guess the answer to your question is NO. Quote

BirdNestBen Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 I've never tried the Sahara....I have had my Pflueger President a few years now and it's given me no trouble...... it's super smooth- don't quote me on this but I believe it has 10 bearings..... its relatively low maintenance and super tough.... every now and then I'll use some reel cleaner spray on it....... and I have had to use a little reel oil..... it keeps going strong...... You might check and see if they still have a sale on there..... I got my reel with 20% off and had a $10 off coupon..... they also have the Symetre in a smaller model....... My advice would be to go in and reel on them a little and get the feel of the rods........ get something that feels nice to you......... I don't think you'd go wrong with either one of these reels........... good luck Quote

kikstand454 Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 hey. i have the exact set up you want. i use it constantly for what youre talking about doing. i have a 6'6" medium uglystick intercoastal graphite (blue wrap) with a "40" series quantum incyte reel. it is perfect in every way for what i use it for which is everything. lol. it has enough give to make catching slot trout fun and yet enough backbone to easily tame slot reds like the one in my avatar. the reel is around two years old and is as smooth as the day i bought it. the drag is smooth, the casting is effortless. 11 bearings and a spare spool, for $40 bucks or so. i use one spool for salt (20lb powerpro braid) and one for bassin' (8lb yozuri hybrid) and i fish probably and average of 6 to 8 days a month year around. the rod is indestructable as you know and has spent the last 5 years with me riding in the back of trucks and the bottom of canoes and gheenoes and still landed a 3ft. bonnethead shark last weekend. trust me when i tell you its all you need for under a hundred dollars.
