Sharkbite Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Hey Guys I was on the lake yesterday and I was cranking with my new crank bait setup. I have a Pfleuger Trion on a 6'6'' Med Cabelas Fish Eagle II GREAT COMBO!!! I was fishing in about 20' to 30' of water and I was using a deep diving bait. By the time the bait got back to thye boat it was only at 12'. I think I need more distance to get the bait deeper. My only concern with this combo is that I have had problems with every other BC reel I've had. I was thinking about taking off another brake but I am to scared to. Is there anything else I could do? I also have a #10 mono line on. I read a article from Mike Ike that by changing the line it will change the preformance and depth of the baits. I don't think I can or should go lower on my line for this reel. Do you? Quote
Super User islandbass Posted October 13, 2008 Super User Posted October 13, 2008 Use heavier crankbaits or ones that are more aerodynamic. I can tell you that crankbaits, even if they weigh the same, won't cast the same. The Rapala DT6 is an example of a crankbait that casts excellently, better than most. If you are getting about 75-80', you are actually doing alright. A line with a thinner diameter could also contribute a bit to casting distance and ensuring that the lure's weight falls within the specs of the rod. lastly, technique (mechanics of the cast) play a role. Learning to load the rod properly ensures optimum and maximized casts when desired. I too have a trion. At least in my hands, it does not fair well with lures at 1/4 or less without some serious fine tuning. I love the reel, but when it comes down to that weight, my trion can't hold a candle to any of my shimanos. Quote
Bassboss Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 I wouldn't not go lower than 10lb, in fact, i would not even go under 12lb unless it was sufix elite! You could try getting the brakes really loose, and hope you don't get any back lashes! Try getting sinking crank bait to get it down deeper, but I find slow floaters do better. The only other idea I got would to use a heavier crank, like a DT, but that's not cheep crank! Hope this helps! Quote
Super User Raul Posted October 13, 2008 Super User Posted October 13, 2008 Casting distance is ruled by a conjunction of a lot of factors like: line ( type & diameter ), rod action & power ( the lure is within rod specs to load properly ), rod lenght ( longer rods cast farther because you have more leverage ), lure ( weight, aerodynamic profile ), reel ( spool weight, type of spool supporting bearings, , braking system, lubrication ), casting technique and so on. For example, you say you have 10 lb test nylon, the catch is which type, XL doesn 't cast like Big Game or XT even being the same diameter. Brake settings and line tension also play a role. Like IB mentioned, lure aerodynamics ( jerkbaits like the original Rapala cast like crap ) and perhaps you reel isn 't the best distance achiever. What you should do ? well the only thing you can do is to experiment. Quote
Sharkbite Posted October 13, 2008 Author Posted October 13, 2008 Ok thanks guys. So I really have no choice but to play around with it and make some changes. I might try taking off one brake to see how I do. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted October 13, 2008 Super User Posted October 13, 2008 Longer rod (7'6), lighter line (Pline CXX 8 lb.) and a Shimano Curado 200E5. Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 13, 2008 Super User Posted October 13, 2008 Watch this http://sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/tournaments/elite/news/story?id=3383737 Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 14, 2008 Super User Posted October 14, 2008 That's Catt's favorite video ;D Yelp but does it not show you how to get you crank bait deeper? Quote
Pencil Pusher Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 "Kneel and Reel". That's how Elias won the Classic years ago and started people using 7' and 7 1/2' rods for crankbaits. Quote
Big Tom Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 Catt, thanks for this video. I was just thinking about how much I would like to see this again the other day. Quote
