You guys tried the Quantum Code, if so how good of a b/c reel is it?

I'm looking to possibly getting the 6.3:1 gear ratio...but just not sure if I should buy this reel.  Wanted to get some opinions.

Thanks

I tried the Burner model, but sold it after only a couple months.  It was not very smooth on the retrieve and the frame was bigger and heavier than I liked (I have pretty small hands).  I don't have any beef with Quantum rods or reels (I had several Energy casting reels at one time and still have an Accurist PT and a couple spinning reels, too), I just found that I preferred my Shimanos and Pfluegers for their size and smoothness.

About two months ago I sent my Revo S to get serviced and was in desperate need of a reel for my spinnerbait combo. I was gonna go fishing the morning after so I made a trip to BPS. I ended up purchasing the Code that night, after reading some good comments about it.

The morning after I went fishing and about 1-1/2 hours into fishing, the reel started screeching horribly. It was so annoying that my fishing buddy asked me to please stop using it, because the noise was bothering him. Needless to say, I returned it that afternoon. I had the reel for less than 24 hours and promised never to touch a Quantum again.

Get the KVD version at BPS , it cost about ten bucks more than the standard reel but it has two more bearings and casts like a rocket. Stay away from the burner version of the standard reel.

The Code looks like a great reel, I am fixing to buy another BC for a backup and the code was a possibility until I found out it had ONLY 3 brake settings, that is just not enough for me, as I fish everything from 1/8 ounce spinnerbaits to 3/4 ounce buzzbaits, and the ability to fine tune the reel to match what I'm casting is minimized.  My main reel is the Energy 760PT.  My friend recommended Quantum to me with the advice to go for a PT series.

I bought 2 of them and i am happy with the performance. They are worth the money but no more. The external braking system is great, the frame is small and light, castability is just decent, one of my screams occassionally and the other is quiet.

I have caught everything from trout to redfish and never had a broblem. The drag performed flawlessly on a big bull red.

Just bought the Burner as my first BC. If it is screaming tighten the cast tension. I found that if it is too loose it will start making this noise. Other than that mine is extremely smooth on cast and retrieve. I am new to b/c so only having 3 settings for the brake does not bother me. I leave it on 3, I tried free to get more distance but it was causing birds nests. Does the brake need to be tightened for heavier lures and loosened for lighter ones? I have been throwing frogs, t-rigs, and jigs all on the same setting with no problem with birds nests on setting 3. 50 lb braided

This is the only low profile baitcaster I have used but I wwill be trying a few more later and report back on the comparison to the others.

Tackletour.com shows the new PT series coming out for 2009, the Energy looks awesome!!!  I didn't much care for the Quantum reels up till now but after seeing these I may want to check them out a bit more.  I looked at the Code at Wal-Mart when it first came out but it didn't impress me at all, just wasn't smooth when cranking it, not like I though it should have been anyway.

Rooster, (or anyone) upon a good friends recommendation I got the Quantum EnergyPT, sounds like you have used several types of BC's, like I mentioned earlier I am fixin' to buy a second BC, would you recommend another brand similar in quality to the PT?  Another friend has a Browning Midas and a Pfleugar (?) but personally I prefer the Quantum.  I fish all baits/lures/methods with it as well.

Energy is a great reel, have one, if you prefer the Quantums stick with them. I also have two Tour PT and two Academy Sport 7:1 burners made buy Quantum, love them all.

Good Luck :)

personally i like the codes! now is it in the same class as my fuegos, zillions, or curados, no, but it has a great shape, cast very well, and holds up very well when put to work on coosa river spots!! you can find em for 60ish$$ and to me they are well worth that!

I too enjoy my code... I have better reels but it's decent for the money. I also have small hands but have no problem with the size. It is a bit noisy and needs oiled out of the box FYI...it's not as good as Zillions, Fuegos, or curados but you could buy 2-4 codes for the price of these reels

I have two. I bought one new and one used. I have not had any problems with the one I bought new but many other people have. I have seen many posts on other boards of folks saying that the reel would start making a screeching noise or the thumb bar would get stuck half way down. The thumb bar did stick on the used one I bought and the gears started skipping when it did this, like it was caught between free spool for cast, and engaged for retrieve. I have seen many posts concerning these reels and people seem to be split down the middle on the ones that like them and ones that have had trouble. It would seem you either get a good one, or you get a bad one with these reels. A friend of mine bought his after I did and he is who I bought my used one from. I told him about the thumb bar release hanging up and he said it did it off and on since it was new. My opinion is it is a cheap made reel that is not worth the 80.00. For the same money, I would probably get the Accurists PT.
